Project Green: The Final Take

It hardly seems like it was a week ago that Anna announced Project Green and again invited us to play along. When I first saw the color choice I was a little apprehensive about finding things to photograph that would somehow be a little out of the ordinary. I'm thrilled with the things I found and continuously marvel at what other participants found as well. I thank Anna for pushing me to see the extraordinary in the ordinary; or, as Raven commented on my post yesterday, "I love it when ordinary things take on the quality of art."

Those of you who read my blog regularly know I try to match the music playing with what I've posted. Most of the week I chose Kermit singing It Ain't Easy Being Green. Last week Christy posted a really cute Kermit puppet so I'm going to close out my Project Green with a real frog. I managed to "capture" him as he sat on a rock by the small pond in my yard. I just love the green around his mouth!

I've been GOing green for a week now; but it's time to move on to other adventures while waiting for Anna's next project in late May. That's when she'll give us the GO on a new project and color.

Project Green: Take Eight

Because Friday Was Shopping Day

Last Friday morning I was at the local Wal-mart picking up a few needed essentials. Sitting in the nearby strip shopping center were these carts and they were green! So I asked myself, what was one more stop in my busy day? I pulled out my camera, took a couple quick pics, hopped back in the Jeep, and off I went. Another Project Green photo was in the camera ready for downloading. It was only later I wondered about those cameras on the side of the building. I didn't see myself on the evening news under "Have You Seen This Woman" so I guess nobody noticed. And, I still can't believe I found the little song lyric that you hear playing. It sure fits the photo though. Enjoy!

About the Moth

I did some research and found this green beauty is a Luna Moth. It is one of the largest moths found across eastern North America. They are well known for their green-yellow colors and long tails, and although they are often seen in pictures, they are a real surprise when found in nature.
They have wingspans of up to almost five inches; but appear even larger because of long tails on its hindwings. Notice the "eyespots" on the wings which are especially noticeable against the pale green color of the wings. They have large feathery "plumose" antennae that are used by the male to pick up minute traces of pheromones released by the female so he can track her down in complete darkness.
The Luna moth is a wild silk moth. They have declined in numbers since the 1960's due to habitat destruction and increased use of bright vapor lights that disrupt mating.
It is a nocturnal species, and not often seen in the daytime. Their night flying habits and short life span as an adult, only about a week, combine to make them a rare find. The male does not have a mouth and does not eat. He lives for one week for the sole purpose of mating!

About The Picture

I found this moth hanging near the bottom of the outside garage door one morning last week. It was near the base of the door as I was walking by. If you enlarge the photo you can see this one had lost one of its antennae. You can also see by the sunlight that it was way past the time it should have been out flying around. I was sure it would fly before I could get a photo but I zoomed in and got the picture above. After finding it in daylight, researching it and noticing the lost antennae when I enlarged the photo I sadly suspect this little guy was near the end of his one week of life. I'm glad I got to "capture" him though. Since his soul purpose was for mating I think he probably had a fairly nice life considering!!!

I guess too, that for these Luna moths is really isn't easy being green.

Skywatch Friday With GreenProject Green: Take Five

I've been doing a Project Green with Anna where we are sharing photos with a green theme which started Monday. Monday afternoon I was sitting in the mall parking lot and gazing at the sky in front of me with new green growth on the trees in my eyesight. The clouds were white and puffy. I thought to myself it would make a perfect photo to combine Skywatch and Project Green. When I downloaded my photos imagine my surprise to see ole' green Shrek himself like he was standing there, his head laid back and his hands arms reaching up looking up at the clouds!
I hope you see him too. If not, well then maybe it's all that champagne I drank yesterday celebrating my 100th post!!!

REACHING A MILESTONE

Today marks a milestone of a journey I began just over six months ago.

It was then that I began blogging for no reason other than everyone else was doing it and I didn't want to be left out! I had no idea what I wanted the blog to be like or even if I could sustain it.

In the beginning this commitment to write and share something of myself every day was a bit of a challenge. Now, it is almost an obsession that has become a part of me and makes me who I am.

Today I want to THANK those of you who feed this obsession with your visits and comments. They help sustain me and my endeavors and in turn sustain a blog started because YOU were doing it too!!!

Project Green: Take Four

I had hoped the green champagne bottle would appear more green in the photo (you wouldn't believe how many photos I took to try to get this just right). It still needs some work. ;) It's Anna's fault - her work makes me strive that much harder!

If you have your sound on you know I have switched today from It Ain't Easy Being Green to Tiny Bubbles. I actually met Don Ho years ago in Hawaii before one of his shows and got his autograph. I bet you know the song; so come sit on my deck under the wisteria vines and share a toast with me while we listen to Don sing his famous lyrics. YOU KNOW, we're going to sing along!

"Every Litter Bit Hurts"

I originally had something more fun to post for Project Green. Then - I shot the above photo yesterday. I had gotten out of my jeep to take some shots of the beautiful blue and white sky. When I came back around the side of the jeep to get in the door I noticed the green bottle above the bank next to the road. I zoomed in for the resulting shot thinking maybe I could use it. Later on in the day when I remembered it was Earth Day I knew this was what I would post.

I grew up in an era of Public Service Announcements like Keep America Beautiful, People Start Pollution; People Can Stop It, and the caption under my photo about litter. I know many people just won't do their part; but their trash is their trash. All I ask is that they be responsible and dispose of it in an appropriate way. Honestly, I know it's not always easy being green. I would hope people would recycle; but if not I wish they would just put it in the garbage. Throwing it out the car window alongside the road just won't do! I'll get off my soapbox now and promise that tomorrow I will post something a lot more fun and without any words. :)

Happy Earth Day

This was my sky today off the corner of my front porch today.You could hardly ask for a brighter more beautiful day. I know if you look closely through the bottom of the green bottle up there you can see all the dirt that has accumlated. Although, I thought this shot looking through the bare branches to the sky was pretty appropriate for Earth Day!

Project Green: Take One - Gathering Moss

We're Going Green!

If you're a regular reader you know that a couple of weeks ago I participated in Project Yellow with Anna of Anna Carson Photography. This week Anna is beginning her new project - Project Green or affectionately known as PG. This week she is out to find green and has again invited us to participate right along with her. Let the fun begin!

I was out Sunday afternoon taking pictures of the blossoms in my trees and as I started to step up onto the porch I noticed how green the moss was since it had rained the night before. My friend Tom at Welcome to Wigger's World had just done his post Sunday about moss and I had commented to him that when I moved into my home last summer I wasn't sure I wanted to keep it, but was glad I had. So, I snapped a photo to blog about and show Tom.

I had fully expected Anna to choose blue. I had thought primary colors. She had done red and yellow. So, maybe blue. I guess that was the primary teacher coming through. I had looked at that blue building in her header for days and thought it was a clue and for days I had been snapping blue! At eleven o'clock I checked her post. Surprise, she had chosen that other primary color -green!

I started looking at the photos I had downloaded the past couple of days and there was the moss that I had already forgotten about. I was saved - yeah! But, I was shortly faced with a dilemma. I was waiting to be able to sign in to Mr. Linky on number 10 - a nice even number. While waiting I began looking at those participants already signed up and lo and behold Dawn at My Home Sweet Home had already posted her, are you ready, moss picture. Should I or shouldn't I? I did. Be sure to go on over and check out Dawn's too. Her moss is on a stone that stopped rolling and ended up gathering moss!
