Wagon Wheel

Last week I posted three 'quilt barns' on my photoblog (here). The above barn is the last of those barns I found while following this particular trail in West Virginia. The National Quilt Barn trail was began in 2001 by Donna Sue Groves. In 1989 she purchased an Adams County Ohio farm and promised her mother that she would one day paint a quilt square on it to honor her mother and their Appalachian heritage.

In Adams County there were many old barns and she began to think of painting not only her barn but others as well and develop a driving trail to entice tourists. What resulted was the nation’s first quilt barn trail; a collection of 20 wooden quilt squares leading visitors through scenic Adams County,Ohio. Today, the trail is scattered across the landscape of 19 Ohio counties, and throughout 27 states nationwide. Close to 2000 quilt squares adorn barns across the nation. Donna's mother is a master quilter and just so happens to be a native of West Virginia and lived in the county where I was born. Thus, the idea to develop a trail here.

This photo doesn't present the barn itself well; but it sits right beside a two lane road and no place to pull off completely. I took this photo shooting from the passenger seat out the driver's seat window. You can tell it's right there! The horse had been standing inside the door. When the Jeep came to a stop he walked out and whinnied for us. I think he was glad for a minute's worth of company.

Litter Camera

Time for a Nature Note this week. A couple of weeks ago I took photos of my closed up yucca plant (here). This week I was standing at my dining room window trying to get some pictures of a little bunny munching on the clover in the yard (photos soon to come) when I noticed the yucca was beginning to bloom. I snapped a shot of it through the window thinking I would go out later and take some shots. I've been busy this week and that didn't happen so I used my photo software to create a little impressionist painting for you. All of those buds in the background have all since burst into bloom!Michelle of Nature Notes has also taken over hostess duties for Thinking Green Thursday and I saw something this week that made me realize how far environmentally we haven't come in this country.
Bear with me here for a moment.
Years ago it was practice to bury loved ones near the home place. My husband's family did just that dating back to his great grandparents time. This past Friday we went to visit that cemetery on family owned land. When I tell you it is in the middle of nowhere, believe me, it is in the middle of nowhere. It is a good twenty miles back into a forested area. Don't get me wrong people still live there as evidence of utility poles suggest; but, they are few and far between and you mostly have to go up little gravel offshoots of the road to find them. Imagine our surprise when we rounded a turn and saw this sign.
When I was growing up there was always a litter campaign on TV. Many of you might remember the lone tear sliding down the face of an American Indian. I remember signs stating $500 fine for littering. They're still around. What is sad is that all these years later after my youth we still have to be concerned about litter and illegal dumping. Some folks just can't seem to take care of their trash and unused items properly.
Now I didn't see any cameras or illegal dumping at this spot; but with this amount of fine posted would anybody dare to chance it?

Camera or not, the sign, thankfully, seemed to be a deterrent.

Mellow Yellow: Unfurling Gazania Daisy

These are plants I bought and potted last week. I love the color and the way the leaves are unfurling. The plants were thriving sitting on the lot of the nursery in the hot daytime sun without much water so I'm thinking I should be able to keep them alive without much effort. I'll keep you posted. ;)
I intend to mellow out on my deck today and hope you all are finding good ways to have your own Mellow (Yellow) Monday!

The First Dandelion and Some Friends

This past week the first dandelion showed up on the warm side of the house. I didn't know until Iuploaded the photos that even if I wasn't overjoyed to see this bright spot of yellow some little winged buddies were feeling very mellow about its appearance!
