Ruby Tuesday: Little Boys and Trains

One day in late October Hubs and I were out on a drive looking at the fall foliage and we came upon this backyard train. I don't know if the owner had been a railroad man or not but the train track covered at least a quarter mile and went through this covered bridge over a small creek. My jaw dropped at the amount of time and work it must have taken to erect such a replica of track and train.

Here you can see the caboose is behind a flat car.

We could not see into the other end of the covered bridge but I feel sure we would have seen an engine. All this was about 500 feet off the road on private property. I would have loved to see into the bridge; but more than that I would have loved to see the train running. I can't help but wonder since it is now Christmas time if lights and a Santa might be added.

My Boys

Midweek Blues: Blue Berries On The Tree

This is a photo of blue berries that are currently on a tree in my yard. I didn't even know I had such a tree until a couple of weeks ago. While walking the property line I glanced up into the branches and noticed the berries. I'm not sure what kind of tree it is. My neighbor pulled in his driveway while I was taking pictures but he didn't know either. It doesn't matter really. At the present time it has colorful leaves, blue berries and it's mine!!

The Brenda Photo Challenge

I was visiting Judy of Through Squirrel Eyes a couple of weeks ago and she mentioned this photo challenge. The chosen theme was actually her suggestion. The hostess for the challenge is Donna of Made In Heaven and the challenge has its own blog page here. Challenges take place about every two weeks. The theme this week is Highways and Bi-ways. Since I live in West Virginia my inspiration for the theme was a John Denver song.

Take Me Home Country Roads

On my way out to do errands I often leave the paved roadway for a leisurely drive down a nearby one lane dirt and gravel road. Along the way a portion of the roadway is canopied by the closely lined trees along either side of the road. I feel as if I'm being sheltered by the overhanging branches. I stop and step out of the Jeep. There is a stillness and a dampness. The sun splashes brightly on the roadway behind me casting shadows.
Ahead of me the sun filters down through the trees beckoning me toward the light and my continued journey. Urban life is just out of sight.

On another day this leaf covered road lined with trees in their autumn splendor would be a welcome change of pace. It twists and turns and rises and falls across hills and hollows leading me past steep pasture land and forgotten farms and often opening up to reveal far reaching vistas stretching across mountains underneath clear blue skies here in my 'Almost Heaven.'

Though it beckons me to explore its mysteries, today there are places to be and errands to run and I must be on my way.

When the errands are done and my bones have grown weary I'll head down sun-dappled patched roads.

Soon, I'll Round The Bend and the driveway on the right will carry me home.

Turning Over A New Leaf

When you decide to do something different to change your life for the better you are turning over a new leaf. A new season has begun and what a better time to turn the page, start a new beginning and make your life a little better. Lose those last five pounds, read a good book, take a class, smile at a stranger, hug a loved one - turn over a new leaf and see what happens!
Even the green leaves of summer are turning over a new leaf so to speak. Yesterday was the first official day of autumn and the leaves of my Burning Bush are showing their vibrant fall color.

Last Saturday as I passed the bay window in my dining room this was what I saw! There was Bucky getting ready to head back into the woods and Button sniffing around the back door!

I had gone to visit my Mom again on Monday and took some more photos of the leaves left on her trees. Two maples in her front yard which are thirty five or forty years old have lost almost all their leaves.

Ruby Tuesday In The Fall

It's time for Ruby Tuesday with our host Mary of Work of the Poet. Mary suggested that if we had pictures of changing leaves to post them this week or next for Ruby Tuesday in the fall.

Just over a week ago I went to visit my Mom. She lives about forty-five minutes away and a little farther north. I took these first two images of the leaves on her maple tree. I loved the differences in the leaves on the same tree. The last one is of trees surrounding her now empty garden.

Camera Critters: Fawn Update and The Bucks

Most of you who read my blog on a regular basis know I have a plethora of deer in my yard. I have watched two small fawns grow up this summer. This first image is of the oldest fawn. If you look closely you can see just a faint spots around the neck. It's wonderful to see them get older but I miss "the baby" stage already.
This image was taken from my deck and a farther distance than is optimal for my zoom but it is the youngest fawn. You can still see quite a few spots but they will soon be gone as well.
Be sure to enlarge this one to see the detail. They were way out of range but I had to try. Having two bucks in the yard at the same time was too good to pass up. Bucky is on the right. He's the eight-point I've posted before. The one on the left is a smaller four-point. He has visited off and on but they've never been here together.
I took all of these here at home just last week.
