Window Views: Colored Church Windows

“Let there be many windows to your soul, that all the glory of the world may beautify it."
~Ella Wheeler Wilcox

On a recent drive Hubs and I took a drive around the neighborhoods that border our city park. These windows lined one side of a local church. I can only imagine the colors that reflect on the walls inside. I'm thinking on a bright sunny day that might be quite beautiful although a little bit distracting during the sermon. :)

Let's Go To The Opera: Window Views

On a day trip into Ohio last month Hubs and I found this elegant old building. Located in the Historic District of McConnelsville, Ohio is the Twin City Opera House. Opened in May of 1892, this Victorian-style theater has been open ever since and offering first-run movies and a variety of live entertainment to the local and surrounding communities.

I didn't see any birds so maybe that fake owl on the roof is doing his job.

You'll notice the date on the arch is 1890 even though it didn't open until two years later. The formal opening was held Saturday, May 28, 1892. The opening was to be a grand affair. The program for the evening was the Arion Opera Company’s performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado.” The grand opening was even more grand in that this building was the first in the community to have electricity.

Teeny Tiny Window Views

Teeny Tiny Windows of a Teeny Tiny Church
(click to enlarge to see detail on darker window)
Last week as Hubs and I were ending a day of sightseeing off the beaten path we drove back to the interstate to head back home. We pulled off at the first rest stop and sitting just across the way was this little tiny church. The path from the rest stop back to the interstate had us passing it on the way to the entrance ramp. Hubs stopped so I could take a couple of pictures.
There was no sign and no explanation of why it was there. Perhaps just a calming respite for travelers on their continued journey. Except for a sky shot as we entered the interstate it was the last photo I took. Looking back, that somehow seems a fitting way to have ended the blissful day.

Window Views in Sepia

(enlarge for detail)

These are some old glass doors on an empty roadside store I passed late last summer. The store wasn't open any longer but the outside had been kept in its original form. The doors reminded me of the many country stores of my youth; especially with the cigarette ads on the glass. I imagine a small bell might have tingled when the doors opened. The patina of the unpainted wood reminds me of the little store of my childhood where my brother and I would return our empty coke bottles for a bag of penny candy and maybe another coke. Sometimes we sat on the porch drinking the coke with peanuts in the bottom of the bottle before walking on back home.

I like looking in through these windows to what looks like old tin on the ceiling. Did you notice the antique light above the door and another through the right window? It definitely looks like one of those places that make you think - if only these walls could talk the stories they would tell.

For my sepia shot I took the original (posted below) and converted it to sepia and as Mary did last week I have used a dry brush filter as well.

Church Window Views

I was away from home on Memorial Day so last week I visited the cemetery at the church where I grew up. I have family members buried here going back to my great grandparents families. The original church was built in 1858 but rebuilt just over twenty years ago because lightning struck the bell tower and burnt the wooden church to the ground. The steel bell was cracked from top to bottom. (A sepia image of the bell is located on my photoblog, here.)
I took a shot through one of the windows and was delighted you could see through the church to the window on the opposite wall.
Zooming in through the window I was able to see the stained glass window that would be directly behind the pulpit.

Through My Window Thursday

The View From My Window

Quite a few weeks ago I posted an image taken through my sunroom window depicting a very hot sulty day. (see here) I have since taken other shots through that same window that reflect my daily observations here Round The Bend.
I thought today I would share another of those images with you and post others on subsequent Thursdays. Hopefully the view will be everchanging. We'll see how it goes.

About The Image
The three dogs you see all belong to different neighbors. I took this photo in May. I happened to be near my camera and was able to grab it quickly when I saw them coming from the woods behind my home. This post isn't about getting the dogs on film because they are in my yard. No, these three pals go out hiking together. I guess that's what they do. Sometimes I see them running in a line out to the woods behind my home. Usually I don't see them until they are coming back as you see here in the photo. Gypsy is the one in front. She is very old and belongs to my neighbor across the road. I don't know the names of the other two. When they come back from their hike they are always walking and Gypsy is always the leader. She always stops by my Rose of Sharon bushes and turns to see if the other two are following. When she sees they are she turns back around and keeps on walking. They always come out of the woods at the same spot and practically walk down my property line on their way home.

I think the whole thing is just so cute. They act like little kids who are the best of pals!

What's in view through your window today?

***Hi everyone! I'm back from my visit with baby Lily and it was a wonderful visit. I have over 300 pics to download. Yes, I took a whole memory card full. The nine hour trip home was exhausting; but I'll post some pictures in a couple days. Thank goodness I had tonight's post ready to go.***

The View From My Window and a Tag

The View From My Window
This is the view from my sunroom window where I sit and gaze out at my little corner of the world. The birds, squirrels, and deer roam about outside and tease my camera lens. Today I have captured the hot sulty day with skies of light blue. In the distance a thunderstorm waits.

I Was Tagged
A little over a week ago Debbie of Gittin It Outta My Head tagged me with a meme asking me to post seven weird or random facts about myself. Trust me, I'm not sure you all want to know the weird things about me. I'll try to keep things somewhat normal for you. Here goes:

1. I have natural red hair - strawberry blond to be exact. Did you know that only 4% of the population has natural red hair? That breaks down to only 2% here in the United States. Cool!
2. I'm a Pepsi person as far as cola goes. However, I don't like to drink it straight. Wait now, I only meant that I like it over a tall glass of ice! Want to know the weird part? When I was pregnant with my two children I couldn't stand to drink it or any cola. In college I used to drink it for breakfast. Sometimes I still do.
3. I would much rather spend time on a deserted beach than a crowded one. I love to look for shells and walk just out of reach of the breaking waves.
4. Years ago on a trip to Hawaii I met Don Ho and got his autograph. I remember he had very expressive eyes and was very gracious.
5. I was the first of many generations on either side of my family to go to college. I really wanted to go and be a teacher. I had applied and was accepted but didn't know how I could afford to pay for it. My Mom looked at me and said "if you want to go we'll find a way; I don't know how, but we'll find a way." They did. Thanks Mom and Dad.
6. I have twice climbed the Diamond Head volcano on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. I could never do it again but it was a glorious view to behold from up on top.
7. When I was in high school I used to ride a Honda 350 motorcycle. My classmates couldn't believe I could ride one. I guess girls weren't supposed to be wild and free back then. Boy was it a lot of fun!

Wild and free that I am - ha,ha - I'm going to break the rules and not tag anyone. If you feel you'd like to share some weird and random facts about yourself please do and let me know so I can check it out.

There you have it. It's just a little part of me. Hope you weren't too bored and I hope I haven't scared any of you away. :)

Hope the view from your window today is a pleasant one.
