A View Around The Yard

Let's start by looking down the fence line at the side of the driveway. The forsythia that has been left to grow naturally was in full blown a few days ago. The wind and rain of the past few hours has blown away many blossoms. Looking a little further we catch a glimpse of the blooming redbud tree. The scene is framed against a soft blue sky.Peeking over the fence to our right is one of two coy ponds in the yard. The bare branches of the reflected hickory tree seem to be reaching for lost leaves at the bottom of the pond. A little orange coy swims among the branches. At the other end of the pond the reflections include the blue sky,the purple leaves of the flowering plum tree, and the stack of rock that make up the pond fountain. My little orange friend keeps swimming into view hoping I'll put down the camera and throw in some food pellets. The spring leaves of the flowering plum rise beautifully to meet the blue sky.The underside of the dark purple leaves glow vibrantly in the sunlight!

Macro Monday: Forsythia Bud

I was hoping to have some macros of my newly bloomed daffodils this week but I've been housebound with a knee injury that has been quite painful and doesn't allow for very much walking. Therefore, I haven't taken any new photos in over a week. I hope you won't mind a couple more shots of the forsythia I had brought in a couple of weeks ago and forced to bloom.

Macro Monday: A Forsythia Bloom

(enlarge for detail)

Last week I trimmed a couple of branches from my forsythia bush and brought them inside to force them to bloom. They have since blossomed and add a little touch of Spring to the center of my dining room table. I took quite a few shots that I really like and I'll be sharing more later this week.
I like the softness of this one taken in the natural light of the window. It is straight out of the camera with no cropping. All I did was add a small frame.

Thursday's Nature Notes

Sitting here at my computer on Wednesday morning looking out my window I see the first gentle rain of spring falling silently refreshing the earth.
Each time the rain ceases the birds fly to the feeders for nourishment. The cardinals are there as always. Their brilliant red color made more vibrant by the grey overcast day. They’re sharing their seeds this morning with a couple of Red-Winged Blackbirds and some Grackles that have all shown up this week in the quest for food. The ever present Mourning Doves are content to munch on the seed falling to the ground and have begun pairing up in the treetops. Pine Siskins and Finch rally for position on the thistle feeders.
Flying toward the house I see a wide wingspan and grab my camera. For a couple of days now a vulture has circled. I haven’t yet been able to snap his photo. I see that he lands in a nearby tree and I watch and wait. He’s too far away to get a photo. Suddenly I see him leave his perch for the ground. I try quietly to open my sliding glass doors and slip out on the deck in hopes of catching a glimpse of him. Suddenly I realize the wet deck is cold to my bare feet. The warm weather of the previous days is gone. There isn’t time to rethink and go back for shoes. I slip quietly to the end of the deck and see Mr. Vulture just off in the woods. Just as I clicked my camera he flew in a blur of feathers. Next time. Maybe.
I can tell that the day is going to be mostly wet. I’m thankful I took a walk around the property yesterday to see all that’s happening. The first buds of the plum tree are starting to spring forth; their tiny blossoms miniature works of art. More of the daffodils are ready to emerge from bulbs that look as if they could burst at the touch. The smallest of the forsythia bushes are in complete bloom. Even the bugs have already found the little trumpet shapes and are feasting away.
Even though it is a wet cool day in March warm Spring days are ahead. The rain is falling gently, the earth is again coming to life and I find myself longing for green leaves on the trees, fireflys, fresh tomatoes from the garden and being outside looking up at the stars. It's all just beginning. For today I'll sit back and enjoy what is mine for the moment. When the rain stops I'll go out again and marvel at the surprises that no doubt await me.

Mellow Yellow Forsythia

These are a couple of shots of a small forsythia branch that I pinched off of the bush and brought inside and stuck down in a cup of water. That's all I did. About a week later - blooms.
Guess you could say I made spring come to me!

Project Yellow: Park Within the Lines, Please

"Don't Get Too Near the Forsythia Bushes"

Found this in a Kentucky Fried Chicken parking lot on Friday afternoon. Did I have lunch you ask? You bet - the only chicken I really like. After all, "it's finger lickin' good!" Are you hungry now? Well, go ahead, pull in - looks like the parking lot's empty!

Remember to stop by Anna's for more Project Yellow participants!

Project Yellow: Yellow Against Blue

While blog surfing Sunday night I noticed one of my favorite bloggers was participating in a challenge begun by Anna of Anna Carson Photography. Anna's blog is a photo-a-day blog. Having recently completed a Project Red she is now beginning a Project Yellow where she will try to find all things yellow to photograph and share. She has encouraged any of us who might want to take the challenge to join her everyday this week or just one day; whatever works for you.

I thought this would be fun to do so I'm going to try to participate this week. My photography skills in no way compare to Anna's but I think it will be a fun challenge to see what yellow subject matter I can find. If you want to participate let Anna know in the comments, invite others, and link back to Anna.

My first yellow take is from the forsythia bush in my front yard. Everywhere I went today they were in full bloom. It was such an amazing contrast to the bare branches of last week. I actually took two closeup photos I really liked so I'll post the other one later in the week.

Now, I'm off to find more YELLOW to brighten my day!!

Tiny Yellow Trumpets

April is
when the earth
parades in a green so brand-new
you can almost hear it playing a tune,
turning tight buds
of forsythia bushes
into tiny yellow trumpets…
~Bobbi Katz

It was about 7:15 when I almost didn't catch these deer crossing the yard into the nearby woods. The photo is a little dark but this was yesterday's front yard wildlife!

While trying to capture the deer I turned my camera to the sky for the calming blues before sunset.
