Shadows on the Wall

This is a small 'hope' tree I have on my front porch year round. It is decorated with three different colored tin stars and is lighted. I like this image for the shadow of the star on the wall of the house and for the shadows of the branches on the star itself.

Edited in response to comments: When I was searching for a new home in West Virginia I drove around many areas trying to find the “spot” I would call home. It didn’t seem to matter where I went or which neighborhood or town I was in they all had one thing in common. There always seemed to be a little grapevine or alpine tree or trees on the front porch. They all looked so homey. I saw log cabins, ranch houses, and townhouses with trees. The idea crossed lines too between the wealthy and not so wealthy. In Virginia my neighbors would have thought I was crazy to have a Christmas tree up all year. But here in the mountains, I knew I wanted one. When I walked into the house I eventually bought there was a fully decorated alpine tree in the corner with a small welcome sign underneath. The realtor explained that the homeowner called it her hope tree. I placed mine on my front porch and the stars are always on it and often I add other little decorations like plastic easter eggs at Easter. It's done with the hope that all who enter will feel welcome when they approach my front door.

What a lovely shadow is cast by the star. What is a 'Hope' tree? I have never heard of it before.

Wonderful picture. You are awesome at that Carletta. I also would like to know what a hope tree is? I've never heard of it either. I Googled it and get a lot of hope tree organizations etc.

I have never heard of a hope tree, but I understand the premise. There is a tradition that my grandmother followed: if the year was good, then a bit of Christmas remained up until the next Christmas, when the year was again assessed. If the year was bad, then all of Christmas was packed away before the first day of the New Year, so nothing contaminated the hope of a new beginning.

Perhaps these traditions share a common root.

I have never heard of a hope tree and I love yours. Carletta, you are just so darn creative and peaceful and content and happy and I just love visiting you!

Now I must get me a hope tree :)

I'd like a "hang your troubles by the door" tree for when I come home from work. Um...will give some thought to that. Any ideas?

I love this picture and I just love the idea of a hope tree. I have to see if I can come up with a version of this for indoors that also can't be killed by neglect or Angel cat.
