Morning Deer In Shadows

One morning last week hubby had a doctor's appointment and as I walked by the sunroom I glanced out the window to see two deer coming across the meadow in the dew covered grass. The backlighting of the morning sunrise put them in lovely shadows. You can tell that they see me standing in the window. They come underneath the big old oak tree in my backyard to find whatever bird seed the birds have knocked from the feeder hanging in the tree. They have in the past sniffed at the finch feeder you see in this shot.
It was a lovely way to start the morning.

Shadow Shots

Doesn't it look like a little mouse is sniffing the daffodil?
Love how the shadow elongated the jar!
This was taken outside on the deck. The patio table is in the corner which was in shadow and the evening sun shown on the bouquet of daffodils. I know the light is harsh but I like the bold contrast.
A sunny yellow daffodil!

Ouch!

(click to enlarge for best view)

On a recent drive hubby and I found some thistle along the road. I very carefully cut a couple to bring home and photograph outside on my deck. It's been almost six days so the thistle is no longer in pristine shape but I had my camera out and was happy with all the bubbles of bokeh I achieved with this shot.
While I was trying to position the jar to get the most of the light I noticed the mop head shadow in the dappled light.

Shadow Shot

This is my hummingbird feeder ready and waiting for me to add a little food for our summer visitors. Everything has bloomed a little earlier this year and I thought maybe the hummingbirds would show up early too and I wanted to be ready. My Mom thinks she saw one earlier in the week. It did turn cold the past couple of nights so I'll hold off a few days before adding any food but I'm expecting to see my first hummingbird within the next couple of weeks.
With the bright sunshine I thought it made a wonderful shadow shot and I even get to emulate Sylvia's wonderfully colored shadows that I've envied for so long. Hope the sunshine is bright where you are. If so, get out and take a walk with your shadow!

Shadow Shot Sunday: The Damselfly

This shot was taken near the end of July. The sun was high in the sky and the light so harsh that this little damselfly is almost washed out against the weathered board of the deck steps. I had been trying for weeks to get just one shot that I was happy with. When I downloaded the photo I was concentrating on the fact that he wasn't as crisp and clear as I had hoped; but then I focused my attention on his shadow. In the photo his wings seem non-existent except in the shadow. The shadowed wings look like a lightly painted stencil on the wood. The normally straight abdomen is distorted by the wood and the light and in shadow looks like those old metal tinsel decorations on our Christmas tree when I was growing up.
This photo might not show this little guy's best side; but I find his shadow pretty unique.

Shadow Shot and SOOC Sunday

This is my son and daughter in law's lovely little breakfast niche in their home. On the Sunday morning we were leaving I thought the sun coming through the blinds created some lovely shadows.
There is one of these little alcoves on all but one floor of the four story home.
Oh, by the way, under that cake platter on the table was the remains of a german-chocolate cake made with coconut flour. My son found he is allergic to wheat flour so they have been experimenting with alternatives. The cake was delicious!!!
This is my grandkitty Susie soaking up the warmth of the rays on that gorgeous reflecting wooden floor. I love the shadow of the blinds on the floor and the shadows in the chair seat and sweet Susie!
Both images are as they were - straight out of the camera!

The Deer and Her Shadow

This is a deer that frequents my backyard quite often. She has somehow been wounded near the bottom of her back left leg. For awhile she limped and could barely walk but over the past few weeks has healed pretty well and is walking much better and running a little. One day last week on a very sunny day she walked past my sunroom window and when I noticed the shadow I knew she was the subject for this week's Shadow Shot.

Shadows on the Wall

This is a small 'hope' tree I have on my front porch year round. It is decorated with three different colored tin stars and is lighted. I like this image for the shadow of the star on the wall of the house and for the shadows of the branches on the star itself.

Edited in response to comments: When I was searching for a new home in West Virginia I drove around many areas trying to find the “spot” I would call home. It didn’t seem to matter where I went or which neighborhood or town I was in they all had one thing in common. There always seemed to be a little grapevine or alpine tree or trees on the front porch. They all looked so homey. I saw log cabins, ranch houses, and townhouses with trees. The idea crossed lines too between the wealthy and not so wealthy. In Virginia my neighbors would have thought I was crazy to have a Christmas tree up all year. But here in the mountains, I knew I wanted one. When I walked into the house I eventually bought there was a fully decorated alpine tree in the corner with a small welcome sign underneath. The realtor explained that the homeowner called it her hope tree. I placed mine on my front porch and the stars are always on it and often I add other little decorations like plastic easter eggs at Easter. It's done with the hope that all who enter will feel welcome when they approach my front door.
