This past May we had visited a family cemetery for Memorial Day and explored the surrounding countryside. The railroad tracks you see are long abandoned. The trains would have been carrying coal from mines down to the Elk River near Charleston, West Virginia where it could be transported. Did you notice the tree now growing in the middle of the tracks? Down to the right of the tracks are some cows enjoying the shade as you can see in this next photo.
Getting closer I snapped a shot of this cow bedded down in among the trees. It was almost as if she had fenced herself in!
At the left of the photo you can see the bend of the road where we would leave the tracks behind as they continued on through the woods to nowhere. This is the same area I took some Watery Wednesday pics posted here.I hope Becky from Twisted Fenceposts is reading this today. I 'met' Becky just recently in blogland and she grew up here in West Virginia near where I took these photos. She has a 'history' with cows so I hope she gets a laugh seeing this one. Becky is now in South Carolina and has a good sense of humor so check out her blog when you have some time.

Those tracks have definitely been deserted awhile, for a tree to have grown to that size.
I hope to be taking a trip back to WV in the near future. I'm gonna have to take a drive out there and see if I can find the place you have pictured. Ooooo, scavanger hunt. Sounds like fun.
That cow looks like she was warning you to stay out of her fence!!! You know I would have heeded that warning!! tee hee

I think the cow was posing for you. :) I've only been to WV one time and really enjoyed it. It reminds me a lot of NE TN where Rose and I grew up. If I recall correctly, when we went to WV my wife, daughter, and I were sitting in a restaurant getting ready to order when this guy walks in and starts going around to each table and picking up the tips that people had left. The manager called the police on him.
It would be nice if some organization built a bike trail where the tracks are. Beautiful shots! MOOOOOOOOre!!
I did notice the tree...always bittersweet to see things abandoned.
Must have been abandoned a long time I think, by the size of this tree.
I love old railroad tracks and often wander over some nearby my home. The tree growing in the middle of the tracks is definitely a statement of time passing by. Love your musical choices!!

These are super shots giving a good sense of how much time has passed with the tree in the center and the overgrown woods beside the rails.

A farmer tells me that if rain is expected then, cows will lay down in their grass area. The rational is that their backs may well get wet, but the ground under them certainly will not.

Judging from the size of that tree, I'd say the tracks have been abandoned for awhile!
