Ruby Tuesday : Ode To The Tomato

It's Ruby Tuesday! Time to post photos with a little red or a lot of red as suggested by our host Mary/The Teach. Please be sure to click on the icon at the beginning of my post to check out all the nice folks participating today or to check out the rules, post your own red photo and join in the fun!

My entry today is a luscious red tomato. This one was straight from my garden and was delicious as part of some tomato sandwiches. In my book tomato sandwiches are one of the delicacies of summer. In the winter when there is nothing but those really hard tasteless varieties in the supermarket I dream of the taste I'm missing.
This year we had an abundance of tomatoes that couldn't be eaten right away by two people so I elected to can a few quarts for sauces and soups during the upcoming winter. The green beans you see are the second picking out of the garden. So far our little garden has yielded twenty-eight quarts of green beans and there are still fresh green beans and tomatoes for the taking.
Happy Tuesday Everyone!

Wow! That is one BIG tomato. Looks good too even though I'm not a real fan of tomatoes myself. I'm so impressed by people who can do things like canning and making preserves. Looks beautiful and tasty too.

I belong to the 'tomato sandwiches from the garden are the best ever club' too. I was also enjoying our green beans too until the Deer ate them.

Thanks for your visits to my blog, I should have a Monarch butterfly post later in the day.

Our tomatoes were all picked and eated by the end of June here in the Deep South. All we left from our garden this year is Butternut Squash. We had some last night with dinner! Yummy!

Oh yummy! I can't wait until my big maters are ready to eat. So far the little ones are the only one's edible.

Fresh tomatoes are a treat for sure! Lucky you that the season has been good for growing them. We've not had enough heat and sun. I do have one plant producing well, though so we haven't completely missed out. ;-)

Although I am not a fan of the tomato...I do appreciate their beauty. You seem to have a green thumb and a knack for canning. Thanks for sharing.

Yummy. That looks delicious.

My tomato plants only produced one tomato each. How pitiful is that! I was looking down your blog and said "I've seen that bridge!" I'm a fellow West Virginian living in Putnam County. Nice to meet you. And, thanks for your comment.

Carletta: Those are big and wonderful tomatoes. I like a tomato sandwich with toast and Miracle Whip.

Nice job of canning your overabundance.

I can TASTE that tomato from here! And those green beans too! YUM! I do like tomato sandwiches too -- I just like mine with a slice of turkey and a little cheese! LOL! (salt & pepper of course!)

Your vegetables look so pretty! You have been busy.
We had a very bad crop of tomatoes this year but I did have a yummy tomato sandwich last nite.

Ours are coming up slowly - must have been the excessive rain this summer.

All year long I eagerly await the best of summer salads: fresh tomatoes and basil from the garden and mozzarella cheese. Served slightly chilled and accompanied by Portuguese bread - the best, anytime!

We haven't mastered the art of canning, but your jars look great!

extraordinary, tomatoes viçosos so well in his garden and in quantity to make reservations in jams for the winter.

I agree with you. A tomato right from the garden is amazingly better than one from a grocery store. I have some beautiful ones on my counter right now, just waiting for me.

Looks as though your garden has done very well, enjoy its bounty.

Awesome photos. I love the reflection of greenery on the tomato! It's so nice to enjoy the fruits of one's labor on a cold winter day with something from your garden :)

What a BEAUTIFUL red tomato … making me remember the luscious beefsteak tomatoes my sister used to grow before she retired and became an RV ‘vagabond’ … meandering through the USA a few years back. The ‘canning’ reminds me of my mom who used to do this regularly.
Hugs and blessings,

I am impressed that you can. I used to help my MIL can from her garden.

I love tomatoes! My son favorite food. I think the homegrown vegetables are always the best tasting. You had a great post for Ruby Tuesday, and a great blog, which I enjoyed.

Wowie...that is an enormous tomato!
Beautiful canned good, too. We don't get so much, but my turnips are coming up this week. I planted them for this fall and hope I got it right. I've never planted them here before, but I've seen them in fall gardens around where I live.

Oh..I got this link from my cousin this morning and thought just now you might enjoy it. Can't really remember right now where you are living, but this is from Appalachia history. I really enjoyed reading the stories that go with the pictures.

That is why we didn't go onto that balcony...it was full of crazy bikers and there were a bunch of them, too.

They were on another cruise. :)

Carletta,

I LOVE canned tomatoes! Nothing better than cold, canned tomatoes!

Also- which probably adds to my fondness of them... when my sister and I were little girls my mom bought us matching dresses that were RED dotted swiss...That always reminded me of ripe tomatoes, with the little dots being the seeds! :)

It's just such amazing fun what memories reading blogs can trigger with us- isn't it!! :)

Hugs))

I love that big, red tomato. Wonderful jars of garden produce for the winter months - where do you find the time to can and blog, too?
My oh My a fantastic harvest from your garden!

Oh my, now that looks delish :)

I dream of my own homegrown tomatoes in the winter, also. I don't have a place for a big garden, but always put out 15-30 plants. I love my own homemade salsa. And if I had enough, there is nothing like homemade tomato juice.

Good post too. Tis the season. I still have more tomatoes to do, and my son tells me he has picked another batch from his garden for me to can. I just love canning. There is NO taste like your own harvest.
Happy RT.

Wonderful tomato! I did a post on tomato recipes today, after doing my Ruby Tuesday late Monday, and one of my commentators said: "what? another Ruby Tuesday post?" I love the home tomatoes, too.
