Saturday Night Truck Pull

What do you do on a Saturday night at the fair in rural America? Go to the truck pull of course!
I had never been to a truck pull in my entire life and since this one was within hearing distance and almost in sight from home it seemed the thing to do. I have to be honest I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would.
I know all the guys out there know what this is all about; but ladies just briefly a truck pull is when you hook your truck to a "sled" and see how far you can pull it down the track. The sled looks a little like a semi truck bed.
This is what really surprised me. Doesn't this beautiful red four door truck look like the family transportation? Yep, it is! I would have had to hurt somebody I'm telling you.
Of course there were more "souped up" trucks in the next class of competition. These guys were the kind that walked the track and circled the sled to see the "conditions" before they raced.
The driver of this purple beauty was dressed to match. He's the guy you see beside the truck in a black undershirt. That's how he pulled up to the sled. Well ladies, let me tell you, this guy had on purple pants and put on a purple jacket before his race. Who said truck pulling wasn't stylish!
Earlier in the day the tractors pulled the sled. As you can see this was one of the more serious contenders of the day.
You had to love this old farmer. He gave it his best shot but didn't make it a hundred feet when his engine blew. I had to wonder if it was really worth it.
His attempt ended up being the real tractor pull if you see what I mean!
The ladies were represented on this day. This lady and her John Deere made it all the way to the end of the track! Kinda made me wish I had a tractor.

No matter what your ride is today go out there and make it a safe one!

Kind of reminds me of my reaction to wrestling which I was forced to watch from time to time when I was living in Arizona. I call it soap opera for boys, it's all silly scripted and much more entertaining than I would have expected. This seems like a different kind of theater with folks like the old farmer who you really want to root for. Fun post. Cool photos. I'd love to have seen the purple costume that went with the purple truck.

Well I'm a "boy" but I gotta tell you I don't have a big interest in seeing how far I can pull a sled with my truck. Seems like a good way to blow out a transmission if you ask me. They sure have come a long way since tipping cows for fun, huh?

"Nothing Runs Like a Deer" that is "Ram Tough!"

I spent the weekend with guys that do "lawn mower racing" so I understand the mentality. Good clean fun and innocent in a way don't you think? They were fun to be around, not stuffy or overly serious.

Looks like someone's mama forgot to teach them " if ya can't say anything nice, don't say anything." :)

Carletta: Love the post, love the song, love the pictures, love the music, what better a tractor pull at the fair. Okay, maybe a country concert is better.
BTW: I left you a 2008 Award at my sight, accept it if you wish.

What OTHER song could you POSSIBLY play on a day like today??? LOL! I definitely think you should work on gettin' a tractor before next years event! But I'm with you -- you're not gettin' MY truck into that event! (actually that MIGHT be a fun way to send the ol' gal out...) Hmmmm....

Wow! I've heard of tractor pulls but never been to one. Rural entertainment differs a lot from urban, huh?

Wow, Carletta! I'm really getting a feel for life in middle America! Saturday night we just went out to dinner at an Italian restaurant and played Wii! Ha! :)

Nice truck pull photos. I like to see them and the tractor's that pull the sleds.

Years ago they used to pull the sleds with teams of draft horses. Amazing. No whips were used. Just the voice of the owners. I am not sure they still do it with horses.

I sure hope that guy that blew his engine doesn't have to make hay this week. What was he thinkin'?

Great song! Perfect accompaniment for the photos.I can feel the grit in the air and taste the dirt in my mouth. The testosterone level is so high young women are afraid to breathe least they get pregnant! You've captured it all right here.

This isn't the sort of thing I usually do, but many years ago I had a friend who loved truck and tractor pulls and I went to them for a year or two with him. Knew the names of the various trucks and tractors and some of the drivers. It was fun and I'd go again, but not high on my priority list. I did enjoy your photos, though.
