Sitting On The Rail of the Deck......

I was surprised to see this female Red-bellied Woodpecker literally 'sitting' on the rail of the deck.
She kept look all around her while she took a little rest.
Satisfied with her surroundings she soon settled on a more comfortable position.
She isn't alone in our little neck of the woods. Mr. Red-belly often comes for suet as well.
Linking to Macro Monday and Wild Bird Wednesday.

A good story about your woodpeckers. Amazing how strong their tails are.

still find it amazing seeing all the woodpeckers via WBW, it's really made me think about birds around the world and how diverse they are. (we don't have woodpeckers in Australia). funny photo of this one perched on it's bottom!

Oh I do love these images of the woodpecker. Especially the last one...the lighting that you captured and the brilliance of its crown make the image outstanding!!!

If you think you're feeling 'old' about your grand child starting school...17 tomorrow for Dillon, but my oldest grandson will be 24 in May!!!

she was probably waiting for you to leave so she could start pecking away in private!! :-) great captures!

Carletta...Great captures. We are seeing more woodpeckers this year than ever before. Hope we get the BIG snow tonight and they are all out tomorrow when I can go out with the camera. It is SO cold here right now. genie

I can not tell them apart.

Always enjoy seeing images of these chaps. They are quite lovely, but to our natural wood home, they do naughty things when they pair up for breeding, thinking this should be their home too;'(~

I've never seen a woodpecker sit quite like that. Fantastic shots! We have a pair of them at the feeders and they're among my favorite woodpeckers.

Carletta said...

Brian, I think you and Nancy are the only two who noticed how unusual she is sitting. I had never seen this before so I was happy I got the shots.

I love the red-bellied woodpeckers. We had a pair at one time, then I only saw the female for a couple of years. This year, I've seen a male only. You got some great shots.

Wonderful shots of a beautiful woodpecker!
I guess she had tired feet from grasping for support all the time and thought she'd try something different!
This is what makes birding so interesting!
