A Squirrel and His Antics

I had to laugh at this little squirrel whose picture I took through my sunroom window. If you look closely just underneath him and to the right is a hanger that holds my bird feeder. I think he sat there contemplating how he could get to the seed. That thin strand of wire didn't seem to be the route he wanted to take.
I was on the phone with my Mom when out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a flying gray mass. I told my Mom to hold on a minute and grabbed my camera. Mr. Squirrel had climbed down the tree and was across from the feeder when he took the risk and jumped a good three feet toward the feeder. As you can see he was hanging on for dear life.
After swinging around a few times he was finally able to position himself around the feeder and grab a few bites before dropping to the ground below. He had managed to shake some seed out so he had a few nibbles on the ground before scurrying off to find whatever nuts are left in my yard that he hasn't already confiscated.

How cute. Those squirrels are so smart it's scary. You can just see this one thinking out the problem! I swear they can get into any bird feeder ever invented. At least that was our experience when we used to feed birds. Nothing stopped them. So we decided it was better to hang the feeders where they had to work a little bit for their treat and then just sit back and enjoy them.

I have watched them try that on my feeders to. They really do get very determined and end up being quite hilarious.

Squirrels crack me up. We don't have any here, it's a riot to watch my kids whenever we go to the States - their favorite animals at the zoo are the squirrels running around loose. They see them as these cute little wild animals, somehow left to run around loose among the people.

what a show! Big gray squirrels are not common in our area, but recently one took up residence in under our shed. We have no idea where he came from. We have been entertained watching him scurry around the yard.

Great shots Carletta, you caught the whole process from planning to execution. Squirrels can put on a really fun show.

Gosh, Carletta, these are amazing!
I often wonder, if we had to go to that much bother for our food, wouldn't there be a lot less obesity? Not that I'd want to go back to hunter-gatherer days, but "lessons to be learned" comes to mind.

Ditto what Melli said. We got a feeder that "discourages' squirrels, it also discouraged the birds!
I am thankful you got a couple of shots of the thief, clown, squirrel.
He is cute.

I like to chase the squirrels when they come into my yard. They're getting all chubby for winter!

I can laugh and enjoy your pictures since the squirrel is going after one of your feeders instead of one of ours. This a great photo sequence.

What a smarty! My grandfather eventually outsmarted the squirrels at our old house, but it was a long and involved process. When the battle was over I stuck another feeder out just for the squirrels, cause they are just too cute not to feed.

Great shots! They are so amazingly resourceful. I remember my parent's continuing war to find a way to keep squirrels out of their bird feeders. The squirrels always won.

Squirrels are very smart. There was a show on either National Geographic or the Discovery channel that showed some squirrels figuring out how to get to bird seed that was staged in the middle of a yard. To get to it, the squirrel had to figure out how to climb trees, ropes, etc. After trial and error, the squirrel got to the birdfeeder! It was very interesting to watch.

This was a great capture from beginning to the end!

So funny! I love to watch them. We don't have many around my house. They are mostly at my MIL and FIL's house. They have the BIG pecan trees there.

Squirrels are just so entertaining. With a few peanuts to keep them interested in performing, why would anyone want to go to a movie? Great captures Carletta!
