Watery Wednesday: High Atop Fort Boreman

In this photo I'm standing atop Fort Boreman in Parkersburg, West Virginia looking down upon the Ohio River. The Fort was built during the Civil War. The bend here in the river provided a wide ranging view. Standing up on the hill looking upriver I could see the white sternwheeler to the right and hear its horn. The river you see merging with the Ohio is the Little Kanawha. The Ohio flows from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to Cairo, Illinois. It will eventually empty into and is the greatest tributary to the Mississippi River.
This is a view looking downriver. You can see it was a great day to be out on a boat.
In the first image you may have noticed a wall behind the sternwheeler. I zoomed in to get a closeup of the floodwall that surrounds the city.
The sternwheeler had blown its horn because it was going to be moving. I watched as it backed out and eventually headed underneath the bridge. Time to go.
Guess we could stop off at Kokomos!

What a view! You chose well grasshopper. :) So clear and crisp looking like a perfect fall day. Have you ever rode on the sternwheeler? Looks like it would be fun.

I liked the views as well...I tend to like any bridge shot. Always amazes me to think of the first people crossing these waters in canoes, wagons, etc.

I really enjoy your photos of the Ohio River, Carletta. I remember learning about it in geography class but somehow it never registered in my mind that it's so wide. Hmmm. Those lines on maps are so skinny.

Too bad there has to be a wall to keep water out when the river floods. It must spoil the view from the highway, eh?

I didn't know the Little Kanawha emptied into the Ohio. Learned something new to day.
Great shots! I especially like the one of the flood wall.

Lovely! My favorite water, since I'm on the other end of it! Evansville, IN isn't far from Cairo, IL where the Ohio ends. What would we do without our big river??

Boy these are nice photographs. Patty and I cross the smaller river once or twice but never got out of the car anywhere to my regret.
