Weekend Reflections

Hubs and I found ourselves in Gallipolis, Ohio this past Monday afternoon. I had researched the town and found that you could overlook the town and river by driving to a local cemetery. This shot is the view we saw looking down at the town and the Ohio River. We were standing on the Ohio side looking back across to West Virginia. In the background of the photo you can see the Memorial Silver Bridge we crossed over to get into Ohio. I originally posted about the bridge's past disaster in this post.

Looking down from the cemetery I saw these reflections along the bank of the river.
We spent some moments enjoying the view and as I went to pull away from my parking spot I glanced into the rearview mirror and this was the reflected view behind me.

Camera Critters: A Menagerie In The Snow

It was snowing and very overcast last Saturday when I stopped by a park on the Ohio River. I knew I was a little too far from this guy to get a clear shot but it was worth it to me to just point and shoot!

I love how the red cardinals show up so colorful in the snow. We had gotten about an inch last Saturday night. On Sunday this little guy was actually pushing the food to the ground below the feeder. Why?

The Mrs. and friends just so happened to be underneath. I have watched these two for weeks and he always seems to watch out for her. I've even seen them sitting on the branches and 'kissing'.

She did take her turn however! So dutiful!

I know - more deer! But, I had to show you 'A Buck and His Harem.'

This is almost three inches of fresh snow from Friday afternoon.

Watery Wednesday: Geese In The River

Saturday I stopped by the park that sits on the Ohio River where I took the cabin photo from yesterday's post. I glanced down the river and wondered what I was seeing.

I drove my car and parked where I could get a little better look. It was lightly snowing and very cold but the geese seemed to be enjoying themselves as they swam out about halfway and then swam back toward shore. Be sure to enlarge this one to see the better detail.

My World #2 : Fort Boreman Hill

A couple of weeks ago before My World began I had posted some photos from atop Fort Boreman here in Parkersburg, West Virginia. (here) Most of those dealt with the Ohio River. Today I'm going to revisit the site and tell something about the site itself. Fort Boreman is the site of a Civil War fort on a hilltop overlooking the scenic valley formed by the confluence of the Little Kanawha and Ohio rivers at Parkersburg. Built by Union troops to protect the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad terminal and the key commercial river facilities in the valley, Fort Boreman was named for West Virginia’s first governor, Parkersburg citizen Arthur I. Boreman. The Fort Boreman site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Looking Down The River

This is looking upriver and over historic downtown Parkersburg. The Ohio River is to the left in the photo and the river under the highway is the Little Kanawha. Looking across this river to the hill on the other side you can see a cell tower. This hill is known locally as Quincy Hill and was thought to also be used as fortification of the rivers; but no evidence of that has ever been found. I will make mention again here for readers who didn't see my previous post that if you look closely you can see the floodwall that surrounds the city to protect it from the flooding river. There is a more closeup photo in my previous post if you have time to visit it.

In my earlier post I was able to catch a sternwheeler on the river and just as I was leaving the other day I waited to get this photo of a barge carrying coal down the river.

From high atop the hill I could look down and zoom in on the local television station and it's array of satellites.

As I hiked around the hill I found an opening to view the Little Kanawha River as it flows toward the mighty Ohio.

Watery Wednesday: High Atop Fort Boreman

In this photo I'm standing atop Fort Boreman in Parkersburg, West Virginia looking down upon the Ohio River. The Fort was built during the Civil War. The bend here in the river provided a wide ranging view. Standing up on the hill looking upriver I could see the white sternwheeler to the right and hear its horn. The river you see merging with the Ohio is the Little Kanawha. The Ohio flows from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to Cairo, Illinois. It will eventually empty into and is the greatest tributary to the Mississippi River.

This is a view looking downriver. You can see it was a great day to be out on a boat.

In the first image you may have noticed a wall behind the sternwheeler. I zoomed in to get a closeup of the floodwall that surrounds the city.

The sternwheeler had blown its horn because it was going to be moving. I watched as it backed out and eventually headed underneath the bridge. Time to go.

Guess we could stop off at Kokomos!

Watery Wednesday: Reflections In The Ohio River

This is one span of a new bridge that recently opened across the Ohio River between Ohio and West Virginia. In this particular spot the Ohio river splits and goes around historic Blennerhassett Island. The bridge accommodates six lanes of traffic.

I took these shots late evening and just before sunset began. You can see the glint of the sun at the top of the bridge arch. The arch is currently the longest span structure of this type in the world.
