Remembering A Hero
A Memorial Day Tribute
Alphabet Photo Challenge - The Finale

An American Hero

This is my Grandpa Charlie. Grandpa was a soldier in WWII. He was fighting the enemy and was hit by shrapnel that nearly blinded him for life. Luckily the doctors were able to save his eyes but he wore glasses the rest of his life. In his later years he more often than not looked at you over the rims of those glasses rather than through them.

His favorite past-time was fishing. As you can tell from the photo above he was pretty good at it too. He had lots of favorite places to go. I don't know where this huge fish was caught. At the time of the photo I was all of about four years old. He took my brother and I fishing with him many times when we were older.

Grandpa always wanted to live to be 100 years old. He died in 1985 at the age of 92. My Mom and I took flowers to his grave last week in honor of Memorial Day. I also took a flag - he deserved it. Thanks Grandpa for being an American Hero and for being one of mine too. I miss you Pap.

wow,how cool is that? A grandpa that took yu fishing. I had a grandpa that shared his beer and made me willow whistles. I love this picture for more than one reason. It is a window to your past. Crocheted doilies, rocking chairs, church calendar, priscilla curtains. So cool.

Hey Carletta, you just don't know where I'll pop up! Great post on your grandfather. My father served in WWII also. He passed away in 1987 at the age of 69. Too early...

Ahh, but your grandfather still lives today -- in your heart, and in the memories you share with others.

This is a wonderful tribute. Because of it I stopped and remembered some of the wonderful people who have helped make me the person I am today. Thank you.

What a nice tribute for Memorial Day. Your grandpa would be smiling bright, just like in that picture right now, I'm sure of it.

By the way, I tagged you. Hope you don't mind.

I know he'd be proud! This is the first memorial day I've been without my dad's dad. He was also in War World II. I miss him as well.
