Wild Birds: Hawk

I sat down at the computer on Friday morning and this hawk landed in the walnut tree outside my window. I thought if I moved he would see me. He turned his head and I moved for the camera. So sorry for the glare from the window but the sun was shining right on it and well, you do what you have to do to get a record shot.

He had his back to me so I stepped a little closer to the window and tried again.

My movement in the window was enough to send Hawk Eye on his way.  Now that the leaves are off the trees it's easier to see the birds so hopefully he'll come back one day and pose next time. Or maybe those two pileated woodpeckers in the very top of the oak tree just yesterday morning will decide to land on lower limbs. I can only hope on both counts. I have no idea what kind of hawk this is so if you can identify him please let me know in the comments.

  1. What a neat view you have from your window - great catch! It would be fun to catch the woodpeckers, too - but as you mention - that might take a little luck.

Close up and the branches and the bird. Excellent!

  5. This is an interesting visitor to have in your yard. They are very wry so it's surprising to see it in a yard.

  7. It's always exciting to get pics of a "new" bird. I hope he isn't around the feeders too often. I had a hawk grab a blue jay a while back.

  8. Yes!! I cannot wait for all our leaves to drop. Well, I am asking for a little color first, let me photograph that, then they can all get lost. lol

It's amazing how keen a hawk's vision and hearing is. I had one land in my yard awhile back and it was really tough to get a decent photo. I knew he would detect the slightest movement or even hear me breathing. Fascinating creatures. I hate how they have to eat, but I admire them so. You got some really good looks here! Nice. :)

  9. I think you did a great job of getting his picture without scaring him away. He has a great looking feather pattern.

  13. My guess would be a Red Shouldered Hawk ... They have very subtle coloring and the size is right. Beautiful shots ... your lucky day:)

  14. Hawks are pretty birds but I am so glad that we don't have many around here. I don't want them 'catching' my little songbirds!!!

  17. You got some very good pictures before he sensed you there! No birds outside my window here in Florida, so I really appreciate seeing yours. It's a blessing that we have given up for the warmth!

  22. I enjoy winter garden birding, as you say the trees are bare and easier to watch the birds come and go

  26. Lovely shots - sometimes through the window is all we get. I'd love to see the Pileateds too - we have one that comes around now and then and like you, I have to move when they turn their heads away. I try to keep a camera near the window is I am at the window too.
