Camera Critters in Shadow

Big Birds, Little Birds

Some of you as regular readers know that wild turkeys cross my property at all times of the year. In the past few weeks a large rafter of them have paid many visits. There are about twenty-five in the group and on one occasion two gobblers accompanied them. I took this photo out of my dining room window yesterday morning as they wandered through my back yard. Here you see the long shadows of the trees in the woods behind them. The sun was quite bright as it shone through the wattle of this  turkey.A pair of woodpeckers visit the suet feeders on a daily basis.
The little nuthatches are always grabbing a bite and flying off and almost always I catch them with their heads pointing down. I like that this one decided to stop for a quick pose with his mouth full.

  2. The downy and the nuthatch are so cute..the turkeys are interesing, although I don't find them particularly pretty - just tasty! I would love to have them crossing my yard on a regular basis, but living in the city...not going to happen!

  5. Interesting to have turkeys cross your yard. Do they wreak havoc on your plants?

  6. The turkeys seem to have an attitude, and with 25 of them, I'd take the picture while behind glass...the little birds are more accepting of having their pictures taken, but would prefer you shot from inside. Birds of all types are so photogenic!

  7. a turkey's walk reminds me of that inspector guy walking/sneaking up on someone... ya know what i mean? i thought it was inspector gadget, but that's not it...
i really wish my memory was better! LoL! Jim Carey imitated him in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective! LoL!

  8. Wow! Look at all the turkeys! They seem to be on a mission as they work their way through your yard.

The woodpecker is very pretty. I'm use to seeing the Redheaded variety, or sometimes the big Pileated kind.

  9. Wonderful backyard (as always). The top photo looks as if the rafter has a marked path to march down (but they aren't paying any attention to it!).

  16. How lucky you are to have turkeys in your yard. I did up until this year when our neighbors tied their dog out in their back yard. Now no more wildlife stops by... Good thing the birds aren't afraid. Nice shot of the red wattle!

  19. Great photo of the "rafter group" crossing your yard. Love that "new" term - "RAFTER"!
Now every time I see a photo of the Aussie tennis champ, Pat Rafter, I will wonder where all his feathers are!! ha ha!
Your American turkeys just look very much like ordinary turkeys! The bush turkeys here are very different and are absolutely the scourge of garden lovers!
I would love to see a photo, if possible, of one of the gobblers strutting his stuff!!!
    Great shots, Carletta.

  28. A lot of good photos here. I have really had the turkeys coming in all winter, but they have slacked off a bit now. I am glad you get to see them so much as I think they are fascinating birds. I am looking forward to photographing them during spring gobbling time and hope you continue to see and photograph them as well.
