The Season's First Turtle

There he (distinguished by his red eye) was hanging out by the garden fence. He was quite personable. He let me pick him up and wasn't a bit afraid as some I've had who have only wanted to dodge inside their shells and hide.
I took a few closeups to document his visit and watched him scoot along on his way. I was just happy to know he was around.
Linking to Saturday's Critters.

I think I found his cousin in one of our flower beds earlier this week. I didn't get good pictures, however.

We don't have turtles here so for me they are interesting critters.

I LOVE THIS! I have had box turtles (and others)my entire life. Growing up in Chicago (until age 10), we couldn't have cats or dogs.
I have had several who looked just like this Eastern Box Turtle. Thank you for sharing!

He is so darn cute. What is it about turtles? I love them too. Lovely to get such a great close-up. I usually have to sneak up on them with a long lens.

Hello Mr. Turtle!!! Welcome to Spring!!!! Isn't he a beauty????

I am still on the mend from my surgery ---and being impatient, I cannot wait to feel like ME again.

Hugs,
Betsy

He's a beauty. Does he stay in your yard?

What fun to have a turtle in your yard. We had a small bat hanging from the inside of the deck umbrella and a tiny frog under the umbrella stand - but no turtle.

What a fine looking turtle. Do you have a pond nearby?

DIANE: I HOPE HE LIVES NEARBY. WE HAVE LIVED ON OUR FIVE ACRES FOR ALMOST SEVEN YEARS AND HAVE SEEN ONE EVERY YEAR. THEY DO NOT TRAVEL FAR AND USUALLY LIVE WITHIN AN AREA LESS THAN 200m IN DIAMETER SO I FEEL HE'S ALWAYS CLOSE.
IDA: YES, WE DO HAVE TWO SMALL PONDS OF GOLDFISH. THIS IS AN EASTERN BOX TURTLE SO IT LIVES ON LAND AND HIBERNATES IN LOOSE SOIL UP TO TWO FEET.

He's really cute! Turtles seem to be a popular pet lately around here. We have a friend that has one and they named him "Tank." I thought that was a very good name for a turtle.
