An Evening of Skywatching

Recently we visited our daughter in Virginia. It is over a 500 mile trip. When we left to go down it was pouring the rain. In fact the rain was so heavy we had discussed stopping about halfway and proceeding the next day. Luckily the rain slacked off and we continued the trip. We spent almost two weeks visiting our granddaughters and it was time to come home. As we began our journey home it again was raining. I don't need to tell you that the prospect of driving in the rain for another 500 miles was forboding. It rained off and on all day so there were times when the windshield wipers were still.  These images are toward the end of that journey. The shot above is near Lexington, Virginia. The rain had stopped but the fog was rising from the valleys up into the mountains. I took this about 6:00 PM.
A little over an hour later we could see the sun peeking through the clouds in front of us. It was the first time we had seen the sun all day. I stopped to take this shot. Looking ahead it was a lovely beginning to the sunset.
We weren't sure how long the sky would glow because to our right was the scene above. Storm clouds still moved ominously beside of us and behind us.
We didn't need to worry because at just after 8:00 this was the lovely color of the sunset.

Such beautiful photos of the skies! Our last trip back through West Virginia had snow...and lots of ominous clouds...just as we crossed the VA line, the sun popped out and I was so thankful to see that instead of snow! Glad you had a decent trip back!

Glad you got the lovely sunset, after the long, rainy day!

I enjoyed all of your pictures!

The photos are beautiful, but I hate driving (or riding) in downpours. We were used to rain in Oregon, but it is more just a steady tiresome drizzle in the Pacific Northwest and not a problem to drive in at all ....in the South the heavy driving rain is intimidating, makes the roads slick, and just a little scary. (I don't mind it if I'm in the house...we had a rainstorm like that here last night -- we need it!).

The weather seems to be bad in all places across the globe at the moment, I hope it improves:( however, you got some good skyscapes out of it though, thanks for sharing:)

Gorgeous captures of an incredible variety of skies, Carletta! You did have a little of it all! So much beauty in spite of the rain!! Glad it didn't ruin your visit with your daughter and granddaughters AND that you had a safe trip both directions!! Hope you have a lovely weekend with lots of sunshine!

The fog rising from the mountains is magical looking.
But, driving in pouring rain in the mountains would not be my idea of a pleasant journey!

I'm glad you had such a beautiful sunset after enduring all that rain. There are few things I like less than driving in the rain.

Beautiful sky shots, Carletta. I sure do not like driving/riding in the rain. At least not for a long trip.
