Wild Bird Wednesday: Baby Bluebirds

Saturday evening Hubs and I were out in our driveway finishing up potting some flowers when we heard the biggest ruckus coming from the bluebird houses. Mom and Dad were flying all around and screeching loudly. It was almost night time so our vision of the area wasn't entirely clear. Then Hubs saw a baby come out of the nest. My hands were wet and muddy from the potting so I ran inside and washed my hands and grabbed the camera. When I returned things were fairly quiet and I didn't see any activity.
About that time Hubs carried some potted plants to the deck and noticed one of the babies sitting still in the flower bed. It was almost night so it was hard getting a photo and these two are the best I could do.

I'm not sure why they came out of the nest so late in the day but I probably would have missed them otherwise. I carefully walked the backyard and found three little ones. They were hopping around and not flying and the coming night had me worried. I left the area so Mom and Dad could do their job.

Dad was always nearby keeping an eye on the youngsters debut.

The next morning I again walked the yard and found one clinging to the side of my big old oak tree but as I approached it the baby flew off leaving me with the satisfaction that at least one of the three had made it safely through the night. I hope the others did too.

Carletta, it is always neat to see the babies leav ethe nest. The bluebirds are one of my favorite birds and the reason I got into birding.

Very tauching to see these youngsters, which have to fight the rest of life to survive. Lovely!

Great find! I am bummed that the chickadees and robins bypassed our yard this year.

Dangerous times when they first leave the nest. Let's hope the survival rate is good.

You are lucky to have a pair of bluebirds nesting in your yard. It's always a tense moment when the nestlings fledge and are still so helpless. I love those shots of the youngsters! Hope they all made it!

You are lucky to see them fledge, Carletta. I have seen them fledge one time --about 9 a.m. on a rainy morning...

I'm sure they are all okay.. The parents take good care of them--and really protect them.

They are just adorable. Glad you got some pictures.

Hugs,
Betsy

What a wonderful story. I often wonder how many fledglings make it once they leave the nest and cannot fly well. Great post and pictures.

I'm just waiting for "my" little ones to leave their nest any day now and I don't know what's gonna happen.
I'm glad that at least one of yours made it. Those baby photos are very good!
