Skywatch: Wednesday Evening Skies

I glanced out my front door last evening and thought it looked like there was going to be a lovely sunset. The day had been warm with temperatures in the mid-sixties and by evening the wind was warm. I grabbed my camera and proceded to go out through the garage door. The image above is the sight I saw as I walked outside. I know my jaw dropped. The texture in the sky was unbelievable. I wonder if this was the kind of sky that influenced Van Gogh when he painted "Starry Night"?
Seven minutes later I caught the sun dropping behind the trees. My goal is learning how to take sunburst images and if I had remembered to change the aperture on the camera I might actually have gotten more than a one-sided one. :)
An additional seven minutes later the sun had dropped over the hill out of my view. Soon the dark horizon would meet the light blue sky and blend effortlessly into night.

I'm clueless as to what aperture is and all of that and all I can say is I'm so glad that people know it to be able to get photos like this. They are absolutely gorgeous. That first one is unbelievable. Never seen the sky look like that and then to watch it as the sun set further...WOW Carletta. Excellent.

Beautiful sky and the sun. Love all the pictures.

The texture is certainly unusual. It looks like boiling water. When you have mastered sunburst let me know. Lovely shots and text.

MY jaw dropped all of the way from Oklahoma when I saw that first picture! I can't imagine seeing that in person! Unbelievably stunning pictures!

P.S. My aperture and I had a long conversation about trying to work things out together...you know...for the kid. I ALWAYS forget to adjust that thing!

I very much like the texture in your first photo. To me it looks a bit like paper mache.

Amazing how quickly it changes. That first shot is incredible. Is that what they call a mackerel sky?

Carletta, these are fabulous images, I've never seen anything like that first, textured one.
Aren't sunsets amazing? And each one is different!

Unreal.
That first one.
I only change aperture of distance or close-up. Never know what to do about sun shots. What would you have set it at if you'd remembered?
