Window Views in Sepia

(enlarge for detail)

These are some old glass doors on an empty roadside store I passed late last summer. The store wasn't open any longer but the outside had been kept in its original form. The doors reminded me of the many country stores of my youth; especially with the cigarette ads on the glass. I imagine a small bell might have tingled when the doors opened. The patina of the unpainted wood reminds me of the little store of my childhood where my brother and I would return our empty coke bottles for a bag of penny candy and maybe another coke. Sometimes we sat on the porch drinking the coke with peanuts in the bottom of the bottle before walking on back home.

I like looking in through these windows to what looks like old tin on the ceiling. Did you notice the antique light above the door and another through the right window? It definitely looks like one of those places that make you think - if only these walls could talk the stories they would tell.

For my sepia shot I took the original (posted below) and converted it to sepia and as Mary did last week I have used a dry brush filter as well.

Click on the badges for more of each! Mary will be glad you stopped by.

Great shot and the story of you and your brother was excellent. Oh the memories of our youth...what the kids miss out on today is something else..penny candy...hmmm How is Lucy and Lily by the way?

Aloha my friend.

I like this in colour as well as in sepia! The door has tons of character.

I well remember peanuts in the bottom of my Coke bottle, too. Do kids still do that, I wonder? I grew up in a grocery store in small town Arkansas, so this looks very familiar.

Hi Carletta! I like this shot. It would be fun to rummage around an old store like this :0)
The bikes in my photo are part of the heritage square. They have a buggy, also.

Are those your nose prints on the glass? :) I do love the old light fixture, and the cords plugged in to it! Maybe the fire Marshall closed it for fire hazards ?

I love the story of you and your brother. Can't say I ever put peanuts in my coke bottle! What does that taste like?

I enjoyed this trip down memory lane, Carletta. It has inspired me to photograph some of the old corner stores around these parts.

Before I even got to your part about the bell I was just looking at the photo and hearing that bell tingle. Sight and smell really does bring back things without us even thinking about it.

Nice shot of the old store! Brings bck memories for me as well. We still have an old hardware store nearby that has old doors like that - the doors (and building) are painted though.

I believe the Goulash owners do live in the house.

Excellent shot and work. Your photo seems to come from a vintage movie.

Carletta: What a neat store, too bad it is closed. I can relate to your complete story and we had two little stores like this near us while growing up.

This is an awesome shot for sepia. It looks like it came right out of the 1940's. Very historical looking shot. Love it.

I laughed OUT LOUD when I read your memories from childhood - because the very first thing I THOUGHT when I saw this picture was PENNY CANDY! Those doors look JUST like the doors I used to go through to get MY penny candy! (tar babies were my favorite!) What a FABULOUS photo! And GREAT in sepia!

Great combination

This is great! I just went home and so much has changed. The candy store of my childhood is on the same building, but it has been resided and repainted and -- thought the floor plan remains the same right down to the position of the counter (new counter tops) it is now a florist shop.

I used to stand there with my copper coins clenched tightly in my fist, agonizing over which penny candies to choose.

Lovely how you've combined both memes in 1 lovely capture :)

I love the conversion to sepia - really gives it the feel of the times. Wow - you really brought back memories. We, took, used to brink back the bottles for cash back and spend it on penny candy. Oooh, the selection was overwhelming for such a young child! LOL! Thanks for the memory!

They do look like the old time stores that used to be around...

Wonderful sepia windows. Sorry to be visiting late. I fell behind with Wimbledon and the 4th of July but am catching up today. Neither of your links at Mary's worked, but fortunately I know where to find you ;--)
Hugs and blessings,

I love those doors and I like the angle of the shot. Not sure which I like better. Each has it's own beauty to it.
