Sepia Scenes: An Amish Barn

(be sure to click to enlarge to see the detail)
An Amish Barn
Sugarcreek, Ohio
November 2008

I think the only thing that keeps this from looking like it was taken years ago is the new steel grain silo on the left.

Amended Thoughts and Image
Reading through my comments with regard to the silo and making this look like an old photo I have taken my original sepia and added some grainy elements to it (thanks Mojo) to make it appear like an older photo.

Of course in sepia you can't really tell what the silo is so it could have been years ago.
Great picture.

Love it! I wouldn't have know if you didn't tell me.

Yes!! Love it!! The hay stacks sure look like from the past-as what we mostly see these days are the big rolls...and more often than not covered with plastic! Yuck! I really hate seeing plastic in such scenes!

:) I miss the old times!!

I with Dr. John - if you are not really familiar with the different types of silos then they don't really 'date' the photo. Good shot.

I wondered about that silo. It looked a little out of place on an Amish farm... just too modern.

But I guess even the Amish have sheetmetal workers, eh?

Amazing people. I couldn't handle living their lifestyle, but I certainly do respect it.

And I'm guessing that if you added a film grain filter, you could pass this off as a photo taken 50 years ago or more. Steel silo or no.

Sepia treatment in this picture brings out the nostalgic feel of the place :)

It is also rare to see photos of old with images quite that crisp and clear.

I love the sharp, almost futuristic lines of the barn and silos in contrast with the antique-style, shaggy cornstalks. Great!

The grainy element really worked. I very much like the way the sky became highlighted.

Another beautiful picture. I love how computers allow us to play with photos. It's a neat way to explore them. The sharpness of detail in the first one is really impressive, but I like the second one too.

You got the eye for this stuff. Great shot and wonderful subject. Now that would be a great barn to get pictures of the inside :D

I love it Carletta! Like someone else said, I miss the old times when they were much simpler in my opinion.

Very beautiful. My preference is for the second photo. You live in a beautiful area.

The sepia gives the photos the aura of a bygone era. Faded black and whites taken with an old Kodak Brownie box camera. 620 film rolled through after each shot. Nice. Pappy

Carletta: I love them both in their own ways. Art is so subjective.

That's twice in ten minutes Mojo teaches me something!! I've got to go thank him for that I think!!
He's absolutely right, that second picture is much better! I like how this meme makes us try new stuff and how we all can learn from one another!

I like these very much...and hey, I forgot it was the sepia day, but my photo would probably qualify.

Love these sepia photos - it's amazing what one can do to change the whole drama of a photo. Well done Carletta!

This is a very interesting farm yard scene. The barn is an unusual configuration with its many sides and extensions. The few Amish farms I have driven by were always immaculate and well maintained.

Oh my there is nothing more lovely than an old Amish farm. I always love it when we are traveling through their area.

And you did a wonderful job on the make over. Mojo always amazes me with his work.
