Winchester, Virginia

Less than an hour outside of Leesburg is the historic town of Winchester, Virginia. A city rich in Civil War history and a full weekend could be spent here seeing all the sites. It wasn't so much a destination on this trip but rather a place I had to travel through on my way home. The one stop I did make was at this old railroad station. The station was built in 1893. The tracks are still used by trains; but the station hasn't seen passengers in quite sometime. The present railroad company does use the station for office space.

These were three HUGE apples I saw as I drove through the town. It seems they were auctioned off as a fundraiser for local charities. The red apple you see in the first photo was the original. They debuted at the town's 2005 Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival and the project raised over $37,000 for local charities. Nice pieces of community art.
And, here we are on the road again as we listen to Patsy Cline. Winchester is the hometown of the famous country singer so I thought we'd listen to one of her songs today. We won't go walking but riding on down the road or it will be midnight before we get home!

Tomorrow I'm going to skip a few hours down the road to post some Skywatch photos of my West Virginia Mountains because Friday is West Virginia Day. In the next few days I will backtrack so I can show you an Indian Mound and a Civil War site I visited along the way.

Y'all come back now; ya hear!

Another wonderful day of vacation. I love the apples. Very cool. What a shame that they don't use that railroad station any more. I love old buildings like that. It reminds me of one in Poughkeepsie, NY. (I think that's where it was.) Of course now that I think of it, inside they aren't always quite as appealing as they are to look at. That station I just mentioned was pretty creepy to be in late at night which is when I was there. I'm rambling. My apologies.

Winchester, as in rifle? Don't know of any conection do you? Fun town and railroad station. They are always a fun place to visit. Strange what people will buy for a charity/good cause. :)
Thanks for the reminder of SWF!

I love train stations, maybe because we use them so much in Europe. That's a beautiful building! It's a pity it isn't being used for passengers...

The huge apples look very beautiful, it's fun to know they were auctioned off! wouldn't have ever thought of such a fundraiser.

You just can't beat Patsy Cline! What a voice.
I like the apples especially the red one. Civil War history is always interesting so I'm hanging on for more!

Next time you pass through Winchester, try to spend a little time. It's a nice old town with lots to see and do. I worked for several years as a firefighter/EMT in the county that surrounds Winchester. Loved the apple photos. I had never seen two of them before.

I've got a good friend from Winchester, VA. Thanks for telling us a little more about it. Patsy Cline is one of my all time favorites, but I didn't know she was from Winchester. We'll be waiting.

Those are quite the apples you found! I've been away from reading blogs for a bit, due to time constraints, but it's been fun to catch up with what you've been finding!

I would love to have that railroad station and have all the money it would take to make it into either a home or a quilt shop....but they always appeal to me. I would love to see one made into a home...

Too bad Lily is asleep right now. She'd point the those apples and repeat over and over, "Apple. Apple." in just the cutest voice ever. I'm enjoying your trip and look forward to what's next

Thanks for giving Winchester a heads up on your journey--just found your blog today after doing a search for Winc to see who else was out there blogging (I live there). Next time you come through, see if you can find all 20 of the 'new' apples--each designed with some particular aspect of Winchester as a theme! The original was part of a parade float in the 50's and was memorialized in cement shortly after. It's our thing. LOL!

(Also, judi-gmj, Winchester not associated with the town--that's somebody's last name, I think?)

The train station IS awesome--the town has been focusing on redeveloping older buildings and that station has always been up for some kind of public use--cafe, gift shop, possible connection to mass transit points east in the future--who knows. We all love it.

Lots of great photos to be taken there, enjoy your journeys--will defintely be checking back.

P.S. Next time through, try to find the remains of the civil war's largest tent hospital location--only open for a few months, but they had a radiant heat system for the tent floors!! Completely awesome . . .

Having been born and raised in Winchester, I'm pleased to see somebody else appreciates our worship of apples and they aren't even from there! The apple statues are one of our most wonderful staples, next to the Apple Blossom Festival. If you haven't been to it, you must stop by when it's happening! April 24th - May 3rd, I believe.
