Q is for Quilts

These are a few of the quilts I have in my collection. This first photo shows two quilts that my Grandma quilted when my brother and I were very small. They are all hand done from whatever available scraps she had at the time. Both are pretty worn and tattered on the edges.
My brother's is the red one on the left and mine is the blue one. Mine kept me warm throughout childhood and when I went away to college it went with me. It isn't worth what some homemade quilts can be worth today; but it is priceless to me.
Imagine when I walked into my then boyfriend's dorm room in college and saw this on his bunk bed. It too had been his as a child and teenager. His mother had made it from scraps of clothing from her nine children. No, I didn't type that wrong, there were nine children - lots of scraps for making quilts! This quilt was a wedding present from my mother-in-law when I married. She was a gifted quilt maker and had a few to choose from. I picked this one because of the cheery red circles in the center.
And finally for today I have this one that is very old and very worn and very tattered. Years ago "Country" decorating was all the rage and cute quilted pillows were shown with everything. My Mom and Dad bought this for me at an estate sale for hardly anything. My Mom understood I was going to cut it up and make pillows so they had been instructed if they came across one not to spend much money. Well, you can see the cutting up didn't happen. I couldn't bring myself to cut up something someone had so lovingly put so much time and effort into making. I tried a couple of times but I just couldn't do it - I ended up buying pillows someone else had made from old quilts!

If it's cool where you are today - take one of my treasures and cuddle up! If it's warm just daydream of sitting by the fire all cozy wrapped up in a quilt made with lots of love.

I have some quilts today too. I remember a quilt my grandmother had made out of ribbons my grandfather won at the fair.

Touched my heart today with this one :)

I have a few quilts from my Mom and some handed down from my Grandmother "Nanny". I wouldn't trade them for anything...

I love all of your collection but the last one looks the softest :)

Beautiful Carletta!

Good morning Carletta :)

I wouldn't have been able to cut up that quilt either! They are all so beautiful and lovingly made :)

The story about you getting your house made me feel so much better about our situation. Thank you for telling me about it.

I've always WISHED we'd had a quilter in the family. And then I thought about BEING the quilter in the family... but I found I just do NOT have the patience for it! I still say someday... sOMeday... SOMEday... but I'll probably run out of somedays before I get around to it! Your collection is beautiful!!!

All are very beautiful, Carletta,

I love quilts too, I have 2 that my aunt made, but they are not real old. Still, I treasure them. My greatest treasure is a crocheted bedspread my mom made when she was pregnant with me...lol- YES- it's very old! It's made with the fine crochet thread. I'll post pictures of it some day on my blog.

I couldn't have cut that quilt up either. I think it's very pretty! I'd like to know how old it is.

Those are real treasures Carletta, I can understand why you could not cut it up, I wouldn't do that either!!
This is such a nice post for Q, overhere in Europe, quilts do not have the same "family" feeling to them, our grandmothers did not make them back then!

Your quilts are very pretty. I'm sure lots of love and time went into those.

Oh, Carletta! I just loved opening your blog and finding these quilts. I am so proud of you for not cutting into that flower garden! You seem to really appreciate the work. And they are generally done by hand--even the piecing. So a lot of work does go into one. I don't know if you have ever looked back through my blog, but on Nov 8 there I posted 3 or 4 pictures of quilts my mom made if you want to go see...I can't remember if they are posted in my web pictures or not.

I have always wanted to have a go at this... I can sew a bit and find things like this very relaxing.. I'm not saying I could do anything as good as thee , but it would be nice to make one to put away for a present for our grand daughter.

Those are all beautiful! What great family heirlooms!! I have only ever made one quilt and it's already getting really tattered after 12 years.

Greetings from Seguin, Texas, Carletta. Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment for me. :)

I loved reading your quilt post...so sweet to think of the love that went into these gifts. I just received a beautiful quilt from a friend recently and I know I will treasure for always.
