Wild Birds

She was just hanging out for lunch.

She didn't particularly care for the lunch partner that showed up.

He listened....

and chose to grab some grub and take a seat elsewhere.

With five inches of snow off and on these past few days this little guy was looking to for what he could steal/get as well. I think he might be praying here that I don't shoo him away.
He had nothing to fear. It's cold and he needs to eat too.

Camera Critters: The Birds

There have been a lot of birds at the feeders the past couple of weeks so I thought I'd put together some of my better 'through the window glass' captures and share who's been visting my yard. We'll start with the cute little Hairy Woodpecker who visits the suet feeder every day almost all day. I have both male and female and have seen another female come to the feeder and be challenged by the other. It has been fun to watch them chase each other around the deck pole the feeder is on. Before going on two regular guests will not be getting their fifteen minutes of fame today. The Grackle and the Cowbird. Both are lovely but they will eat everything in the feeder if allowed. Moving right along - the finch feeders have been swamped! In the left photo doesn't it look like they are all staring at me? I love their shiny yellow feathers. Often times it's a wait for a chance to sit down for a meal so someone usually has to wait patiently amid the buds on the oak tree branches.

I believe this beautiful little birdie is a Purple Finch. I've seen maybe one or two over the last three years. It isn't a great shot by any means but I was thrilled to at least get a picture of it before it flew away.

The Mourning Dove was overheard to say, "Does this nest make my butt look big?"

She's nesting in the rafters of our gazebo. I hope we'll be able to record the happenings in the nest.

You gotta love the pose of this little guy! I think he's a White-throated Sparrow but I'm not a hundred percent sure. I've only been bird watching seriously for about a year so I still have lots to learn to be able to identify some of my feathered friends. If you know what he is tell me in the comments. Hubs thinks he looks like a little hawk from the back. You think he pretends to the ladies?

A Red-Bellied Woodpecker grabs some corn and off he goes. I've seen him on more than one occasion eat a few bites, grab a kernel, hop up the oak tree and then fly across the adjoining field with his treasure.

Feathered Friends in Ruby Attire

Ruby Tuesday seems the perfect time to begin a little blogging again. For those of you waiting for a new Lily and Lucy pic I promise it's coming soon. If you're wondering where I've been I unfortunately got sick during my visit and had to prolong my trip back home. I'm still not quite myself but I feel much better than I have in a couple of weeks.

On to the rubies above. I took this a couple of days before I left. This was taken through my sunroom window as I watched all the varieties of birds that showed up that day. I was excited to see the cardinal couple be joined by the red-bellied woodpecker. Their bright reds make lovely rubies don't you think?

An added bonus the same day was the cardinal being joined by the red-winged blackbird. Just a moment before the cardinal was perched calmly on the edge of the feeder when the red wing landed on the other side causing the cardinal to lose balance as the feeder swayed. I had been clicking continously and by luck caught the flurry of wings and tail feathers.
