Wild Birds

I don't feed the birds as much in summer as I do in the winter. A couple of days ago knowing we had a big weather change coming I put up more feeders and filled them up. This wet-headed cardinal showed up yesterday as we were having a rain/snow mix. You have to pardon his dirty beak - I don't provide napkins!

While I was away from blogging during my husband's recovery from by-pass surgery I still managed to take photos now and then. I took this of a baby bird back in June. I heard it in the corner of the garden and went back to the house to get my camera. I took a few pictures and left it alone so it wouldn't be too stressed and Mama could continue coaxing flying lessons out of the little guy.

Here's a not too sharp picture of Mama who stayed a good distance away but kept calling her little one to offer reassurance or maybe she was just warning me. I'm sure Mama was glad to see me leave!

  3. The cardinal is a beauty! Enjoyed the photo of the little bird as well. Looks like your area suffers from Creeping Charlie as well (the leaves by the little bird). It's a terrible weed and quite a menace for our garden. We did find one way to get rid of it--a type of morning glory. But don't try that, morning glory can be an even more obnoxious weed than Creeping Charlie!

  4. sweet to see the little one. :) i feed all year so i can see the painted buntings and a few others that visit in summer, but winter definitely picks up the seed consumption. :)

  7. Great pictures, Carletta. I always worry about the birds --especially this time of year. Right now (with our frigid weather) the birds are eating me out of house and home...

I got a similar photo of a Cardinal this past week.. Such beautiful birds.

  9. Feeders provide us with endless pleasure and I think the birds enjoy the free loading.

  10. Lovely cardinal Carletta. I am so sorry to hear that your husband had to have by-pass surgery. I have had three heart operations, two to replace valves and I know what a lot of stress it puts on the family. I do hope he enjoys his new lease of life. Operations like that certainly sort out your priorities.

  11. I put out a feeder whenever we are here in Oregon, but only because my neighbors all keep feeding them in the winter when we're not here. So the birds just have to move to the feeding station next door or across the street.

Sweet baby bird .... and beautiful cardinal.... I'm looking forward to seeing red when we get back to FL.

  12. I'm fairly sure we all look a little like the baby bird when we leave home for the first time. It is a scary new world out there- and this baby looks very perplexed! I'm glad your husband has recovered from his surgery.

  21. I had to come back and tell you (per your comment about your 4 yr old grandson not wanting his photo made) I had an opportunity when my grandson was about five to get a four generation shot of my parents, me, our daughter and our grandson. Grandson promptly pushed his bottom lip out and looked mad at the world! My Dad died three years later, and we were all living too far away to try again before my Dad died. Kids! :-)
