This is Buffalo Church in Wirt County, West Virginia. A few years ago Hubby and I noticed a sign pointing up a rural road that said log church. We went to explore. The photo above shows the church we found. We try to go back at least once a year. It is such a peaceful place. It sits all by itself at the top of a ridge. I know what you're thinking - doesn't look like a log church. To preserve the church the original logs were covered with clapboard and the church was painted white both inside and out. Regular services are no longer held in the church. It was built in 1878 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
This is the view from the church yard. Most of the pretty fall colors were gone by the time we visited this year but that vista is lovely no matter what!
The road we travel to get to the church. The name of the road - Mayberry Run! :)

A lovely little church but it is a pity it is never used now even once a year for a carol service would be lovely. Yes the fall colours have nearly gone.
ReplyDeleteLovely view from the church! Reminds me of the Iowa River Greenbelt area.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely spot this is. Of course the name Mayberry reminds of an old show from my childhood!

ReplyDeleteThey used it every year for place for community to vote.
very nice your wee church. Peaceful!
Tis a lovely little church. Nice series. Let see now, forever in blue jeans - that reminds me of Neil Diamond's song.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous scenery and I love the old church!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very pretty church (and fence). We found a similar church in the Smokies last year. It too is by itself up on a ridge.
ReplyDeleteI like the road up to the church and the church itself. I can imagine that it is a peaceful place. The view is amazing.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous captures!!!
ReplyDeleteYes the church and view are treasures.
ReplyDeleteCharming church. Interesting that they would cover over the logs, I would think that would have been super cool to see in it original state. Lovely scenery surrounding the church/fence. I like the name of the country road you traveled on.
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely little church Carletta, and pretty scenery too.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, especially this time of year. And even without the name of the road it certainly does harken back to a simpler era! Lovely post.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad they6 are protecting the log church! Very nice shots!
ReplyDeleteThis church puts me to mind of several in the area where I grew up (Grant County). Beautiful church and man, what a view.
ReplyDeletelovely countryside
ReplyDeleteInteresting little church and it's in a great location.
ReplyDeleteThis is just the kind of church I look for! "Where the blacktop ends"...my kind of place. Yesterday I drove for miles on hilly dirt roads, it was great to be a Backroads Traveller.
