Wild Birds: Vultures

While out taking a drive on Sunday Hubby and I came across some vultures overhead with a murder of crows endlessly chasing them. Watching and listening to the crows you begin to see why the term murder seems appropriate. The vultures would fly one way and then the next and it was hard keeping up with them and I was trying to do this from the car window knowing if I got out the show would be over.  I never did get a photo of the pesky cawing crows. They were way too fast.
They aren't the prettiest of the birds of prey and my photos aren't as sharp as I'd have liked;  but I did enjoy watching them soar overhead and glide in the updrafts along the windy ridge.
Since this is Halloween week and vultures seem the perfect subject for celebrating it I took this last photo of the vulture barely in frame and included a little Halloween fun for you.

    Vultures are thick around here....they even come over the houses here in town. Low down a lot of times...I have no idea what they think they will find here.

    Perfect bird to show especially for Halloween!!!!! We saw some Turkey Vultures one year when we were in Arkansas... Got some good pictures of those 'ugly' things!!!!! ha

    Maybe they aren't beautiful in a classical sense, but they are certainly elegant. Nice captures and I enjoyed your description of the crows and vultures.

    Still pretty darn good shots. I have been intrigued with birds in flight lately and still trying to get "THE" shot.

    They even look evil! I don't believe I've ever seen a vulture, other than the ones with two legs and clothes on! lol

    Oooh, yeah perfect birds for the Halloween week!!! We see them soaring pretty often around here and if we're outside, I always try to move a little, just so they'll know....

    Recently saw some turkey vultures roosting in the park but wasn't able to capture them in flight. Their wingspans turn them into something graceful--not what you see perched. And I had no idea that crows would harass them. Strength in numbers? And a Spooky Halloween to you! We're supposed to have very bad weather--talk of postponing goblin fun.
