Wild Birds and An Imposter

On a recent rainy day the grackle seemed to be the one bird willing to fight the rain to grab a few seeds.

What have we here? Not a new bird species but just a drenched imposter grabbing all the seed he can get. This is the first time I've seen him at the feeder. Guess he's discovered a new dining place to get his meals.
This red-headed woodpecker is a lifer for me. I was visiting my Mom this week and walking around her yard with my camera when a bird flew over my head. I think I held my breath when I saw it. It landed quite a few feet away and I got two shots. This was the best one. Mom says they come near her feeders sometimes. Guess I need to plan a whole day at her house in a chair in the yard. :)

The grackles are at my feeders rain or shine, as are the squirrels! That's an awesome shot of the red-headed woodpecker! Congrats on seeing and photographing a lifer!

Gorgeous shot of the woodpecker! I've never seen a Grackle - what a funny name! He's a beauty. I hope you are kind to the squirrel. It makes me so upset when people put out feeders and then shoot at the ones they don't want to feed. Please don't be like that! xoxo

Karen F. - I love the squirrels so no need to worry. :) The feeder has been there over eight months and this is the first time I've seen him there and I haven't seen him back on it since.

Ha! Grackles don't like to miss a meal. And neither do squirrels!

Congrats on the lifer, red-headed woodpecker.

Yay for the lifer! I saw my first red-headed this year as well.

You better buy a lot more sunflower seed; once those little imps figure out the feeder they'll be there every day!

Congrats on seeing a Red-headed... They are the prettiest of the woodpeckers I think. Be sure to check out my blog tomorrow for some fabulous bird photos.

We are having so much trouble with squirrels too... I have to put my feeders up alot --or else they would eat everything. Drives me crazy!!!

Have a great day.
Hugs,
Betsy

this is a solid triple. Grackles are impressive with color. Sneaky squirrels never stop surprising us and a lifer? What more can you ask?

Oh boy, squirrels... This woodpecker is absolutely stunning! He would definitely be worth a whole day of waiting for - although the shots you have are already great!

That squirrel knows that there's nothing like a handful of birdseed after doing laps in the pool. Great pics, Carletta!

I missed two hawks flying overhead w/o camera. Glad you spotted the red head. And like you, I'm thinking need to set up camera and a lounge chair by the window to catch these more elusive birds.

I know that they steal the seeds meant for the birds - but your cant help but like them!!

And the woodpecker is great.

Great shot of the grackle...I have a red-headed woodpecker that comes to my feeders but he is so shy, I can hardly blink an eye without he takes off.
