It's the first of the week and time again for
Tricia's Barn Charm. Many of you may remember the round green barn I posted a few weeks ago that was right beside the road. This barn was along the same road and I was sitting in my Jeep in the middle of the road when I took this photo. I took this the first week of April and the redbud trees were just coming into bloom. I think that little pop of pinkish purple behind the barn along with the spring green leaves of the bushes add just the right amount of charm to this red barn.
a nice, classic barn w/ a little extra loft ventilation. :)
ReplyDeletePositively fascinating. There must be barns galore of by-gone eras in your neck of the woods ( West Virginia) and now they all look desolute and in decay. Are they still used for anything? Certainly don't look like they are used for animals or grain, maybe they house machinery?

Weather report: Magnificent day here, cloudless and sunny, but a bit cool.
In Canberra, the hot air in Parliament is like hell fires out of control. The shenanigans going on down there are unbelievable!
If you hadn't mentioned the pinkish purple I would have never seen it. I was concentrating on the "barn charm."
ReplyDeleteI like the angle you took this from as it really shows off the building.
I wouldn't have seen the pinkish purple without your mention either. And it does add to the photo, greatly.
ReplyDeleteThe red thing inside the barn, is that a machine do you think?
It's infuriating! I can't see a single one of your photos on this post or the last! ANYWAY....appreciated your comments on my blog post! Hopefully I can see your pictures soon! I don't want to have to buy a new computer!!!!!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, did you live in town in Suffolk? Do you know Pitchkettle Road...we lived there briefly.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! We have at least a few things in common, you and I ... a love of barns, and Jeeps! (I have a blue one, my husband has a red one, and our daughter drives a black one.)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite barn shots are those with flowers or budding trees. Really pretty.
ReplyDeleteColin,
ReplyDeleteYes many are in decay. Even in the throngs of decay many are still used for hay storage. Farming isn't that profitable anymore for the small time farmer and the cost of barn repair for these old wooden barns is greater than putting up a new metal building. This one when you enlarge the pic seems to hold some kind of machinery (not sure what Mimi) in the loft that I didn't notice when I took the photo and something is hanging just inside the small door. I would almost bet a tractor is stored in the center for use in the nearby fields.
It's a great barn in such a pretty setting. Glad you pointed out the redbud - very pretty!

ReplyDeleteMany thanks for the explanation, much appreciated. I did click after Mimi's close observation of that red thing in the loft. I doubt if it is a tractor. It could be a sifting machine for grain. Far less cumbersome to haul up there.
Yes, small profitable farming is a dying occupation. Now "hobby" farming seems to be the "go", good for kids to appreciate farming techniques on a small scale and to appreciate the land. To fix that barn would make quite a dint in a bank balance.
Cheers

PS: Papers here are all full of the shenanigans of Canberra and my shopping excursion to Toowong was trouble free.(Joy to the World ha ha!)
Carletta...You and I will do most anything to capture that barn which comes into our view. I try to pull off to the side of the road , but many times I do just what you did here.I am starting to find it interesting about the loft openings of different bars. They are all different sizes. Same thing with the roof lines. I never looked at these things til I started being a part of this group. Such fun. Love your contribution this week. 11 days til I am free for the summer. Cannot wait. genie
ReplyDeleteLove this shot Carletta! What is it about a red barn?? I love each one! I agree about the cost of upkeep and small farms unless they've specialized somehow just can't make a living in farming anymore... sad isn't it?
ReplyDeleteAnother great West VA barn, Carletta. Thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Betsy
This is a charming barn with just the right touch of spring color. That road is a good one for finding barns to share.
ReplyDeletewhat a pretty barn and a beautiful landscape.
ReplyDeleteyou are so lucky to live in "this neck of the woods"!!!
Lovely photo of a delightful barn, and what a gorgeous setting for it!
ReplyDeletestriking contrasts, red, white/tin roof, green and pink/red buds! looks like spring.. imagining the sound of a rain storm on that roof! wonderful!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely nothing to be said that hasn't already been said! This is a great shot of the barn - love red, and the redbuds in the background. Hopefully, depending on Dan's recovery, we will be heading through WV sometime in the fall, maybe September. Will let you know...would love to meet up!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful shot!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beauty! Love the trees in the background, sometimes it is so worth stopping to take a picture of something so charming. Have a great week my friend. Diane
ReplyDeleteGreat shot...your right..the red buds give it a very nice touch of color!
ReplyDeletewonderful old structure. long may she stand! ;o)
ReplyDeleteOh yes, the pop of color in the background really makes for an even more beautiful barn photo, altho, the barn is a beauty all its own, too! heheheee
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the 'hole' up top is how they made it or if it just hasn't been repaired, yet.
love all that green w/ the pop of red
Thanks a million for joining, Carletta! =)
I love such shots !! Beautiful !!
ReplyDeleteRed barns are just so charming. Nice picture
ReplyDeleteIt's nice that you caught a shot of the redbuds in bloom. They didn't last long around here this year, and I never got a picture. Interesting barn.
ReplyDeleteI think this shape of barn is my very favorite. I love red barns and this one is a beauty. The redbud trees in the background just beginning to flower makes this a beautiful scene!
ReplyDeleteAnother instance of how well red and purple work together--your red barn and redbud, Barb's with lilacs. And yes, it is amazing what a bit of grass and foliage can do to improve the appearance of a place.
ReplyDeleteNice one- especially with the red buds in the background.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely barn. I so adore the redbuds in spring. I could park a chair and not move till they leaf out.
ReplyDeleteI missed the round barn, I'm off to hunt it down.
This is a nice barn--what a big opening it has. I eonder if that was on purpose or if it is falling apart.
