I've passed this barn many times on my way to see my Mom; but usually it's going in the other direction. There are a couple of ways to go back and forth from my home to hers. Today I returned home in the opposite direction and found this barn quilt that I didn't know was there.
I stopped my Jeep in the road and was trying to take a couple of pictures. This is how the barn sits in the middle of the meadow. You can see a farm house just beyond the barn.
I zoomed in from where I stood for a closer look. I could here dogs barking at the farmhouse behind me. My husband said if they came in the road I might want to slip into the Jeep. I told him I didn't think they would.
I turned and glanced over my shoulder on the other side of the road and saw this field of sheep that were bleating loudly. Thinking I would pull closer to the barn and take a photo of the front I started to get in the Jeep and as I turned to look behind me to make sure there was no traffic coming I saw four dogs barreling down the road. I hopped into the Jeep!
They ran along side the Jeep as I slowly inched down the roadway.
Stopping in front of the barn I took a photo looking through the barn; but I stayed inside the Jeep to take it.
This guy and his three other companions let me know I was treading too close to their turf. My husband talked to him as I took his picture and then I went on my way.

good farm dogs! nice barn! really like the colors of that weathered roof.
ReplyDeleteI was having fun picturing you making a dash for the jeep away from the barking dogs! The things we do for our photos! Nice barn - love the barn quilt. I keep looking for them, but no luck so far!
ReplyDeleteHi There, I'm trying to catch up after being gone for a week.
ReplyDeleteGreat barn picture, Carletta. Glad you got to visit your mother. Mine died in 1991 --at the age of 91--and I still miss her terribly...
Love the quilt block on that barn.
Hugs,
Betsy
Great shots Carletta.
ReplyDeleteThe sheep look like recently shorn Border Leicesters, they certainly aren't merinos.
The "hound" also doesn't look like a sheep dog either. I sure wouldn't be trespassing onto his territory!
Quilt barns are something that is completely "foreign" to Australia, what is the history attached to them?
Cheers
Colin ( Brisbane. Australia)
Weather report: Winter seems to have arrived far too early for me.
9 degrees celsius here at present in Brisbane, but another fine sunny day, max. 22 celsius.
In Young, NSW, the mornings are already below zero.
Colin, I think this is a Great Pyrenees. A very old breed that has been used for hundreds of years by shepherds. They are naturally nocturnal and aggressive with any predators that may harm its flock. Since there was many more sheep than what I've shown here I assume the farms owners thought it was a good match.
ReplyDeleteThe dogs are supposed to have a gentle temperament and I don't think they would have hurt me. They were doing what they were trained to do.
Love this barn! Great roof line and I like the weathered appearance. The sheep photos just add to the whole scene. Nice shots, Carletta!
ReplyDeleteI like the weathered wood and roof The barn quilt is an added bonus.
ReplyDeleteLike the photos and story about the barn. There's always gotta be a bad guy... the dogs
ReplyDeleteI like that old barn with its see-through walls and lovely quilt square. The sheep in the pasture and those vigilant guard dogs are an added bonus. Doesn't look like they had much to protect in that old barn, but they did have their turf to protect.
ReplyDeleteGuarding the home front! Love these photos- especially the front shot- it looks so fragile and threadbare, but surely not about to fall over.
ReplyDeleteYou found a great place! That quilt is so bright on the faded barn. Nice shot of the front too!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you traveled in a different direction and saw the quilt. I'm also very impressed with the dangers you faced to get these pictures.
ReplyDeleteDoing their jobs as good farm dogs should! Love the barn and the quilt on the side -- someone else appreciates it as much as we do! :)
ReplyDeletehaha, good little dogs doing their job! great photos!! next time carry some dog biscuits!
ReplyDeleteA quilt barn with sheep and a white dog...you are just toooooo lucky. What a fab find. Its age and fading pain job on the roof just give it more character. Love it. We almost washed away. School is late today waiting for the water to get off the back roads. I like that! genie
ReplyDeleteI love these photos and this barn has so much character. I also love sheep. And dogs! Thanks for your visit and sweet comment. Blessings, Pamela
ReplyDeleteThese barn is a charmer. The dog seems very protective of the property. I think the owner is just nearby hehe.

Fantastic photos. I can almost hear the dogs barking and seeing them in my own rear view mirror!! The photo of the sheep in the pasture is awesome too. Love the barn charm images.
ReplyDeleteI love the quilt barns...nice find! Those dogs were doing a great job of guarding their territory! Glad you reached safety in time!
ReplyDeleteI always love finding a quilt block on the side of a barn - - - makes me think "mama" must quilt.
ReplyDeleteThe sheep always make me smile, for two reasons. Farmer friends of our told me they call sheep "land maggots" which rather cracked me up - - - 'cause they DO look like it, no?
Then every time we pass sheep in a field, my hubby CANNOT resist saying, "All we like sheep have gone astray."
So there are the memories/thoughts that your post triggered for me this morning.
He/She means business, too, look at the tail & the hair standing on end! YiKeS! I love these old barns & this one is a beauty! Love the rusted roof, the weathered barn wood, which someone could repurpose before they're all rotted... and the barn quilt is icing on the cake! =)
ReplyDeleteThe road in your header pic could pass for Old Old Hwy 60 near my parent's farm... the black-top patches, the trees, etc... practically identical! I'll have to get up that way & get some shots to compare!
Thanks a million for joining =)
ps there's 3 hwy 60's near my parent's farm... one is the newest then the middle aged one then the oldest which is Old Old Hwy 60... just wanted to explain the name! LoL! =)
ReplyDeleteI really like old quilt barns. We only have one around here. This barn has character, and I love trying to guess what might have been in there at one time. That dog looks like he doesn't want any company!
ReplyDeleteBarn is fascinating to see, and so many of them are neglected and abandoned.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous capture, Carletta!
Love the quilt block on the barn...we don't have anything like those here! I would be jumping right bak into the car too if I saw/heard dogs approaching! :)
ReplyDeleteI love all your shots of this barn! The quilt block is great, too.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt barns are so neat. There are very few in my area.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pleasure it is to spot those barn quilts as you're driving in the country. Always on the lookout for them in eastern Kentucky as I came from a family of quilting women. Wise women to heed the warning of the farmyard "bosses".
ReplyDeleteA fine "barn" series. I like how you not only got the outside views, but a nice one showing the cracks in the back of the barn. The dogs added a sense of watching out...a group of dogs are nothing to mess with.
ReplyDeleteI especially like the photo where we can see though the barn. :)
ReplyDeleteAlthough the barn is not the same one I took, I experienced a VERY similar encounter!...:)JP
ReplyDeleteThe dogs are doing their job! But I'm glad they were slow enough to give you time to get those pictures.
ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful barn!! love the pooch!!
ReplyDeleteI love that last picture with dog protecting his turf....so far, the only trouble I have had with dogs is them wanting to get in my vehicle with me.
ReplyDeleteA fine series of shots of this barn. I liked the account of your "adventure" getting these shots.
