I mentioned last weekend that the turkeys and deer had been visiting our backyard. If you visit regularly you've seen photos of the twenty-five turkeys that are still visiting about every other day. When we started seeing them we also started seeing the deer again. We see them throughout the year but when deer season starts they tend to hide. Now that the season is over they're once again roaming the woods. They are a pretty large herd. I've seen about twenty at once but a little farther away than my camera can capture suitably. However, a mama and her twins who visited regularly in the fall aren't afraid to hang out and nibble on the bird seed under the feeders. She's brought her babies by for many months. Many of you will remember these guys when they had spots. I took these photos standing at my sunroom window. They literally look in my window at me.Here I caught Mama sniffing the air. I guess she caught the scent of something. She didn't run away so I guess she wasn't too worried.I took this cute little girl's picture Thursday evening. She looks much bigger in this photo than she really is. She is the smallest of our visitors. I worry about her making it through the winter and I was happy she was comfortable enough to lie down in my yard.
Snow started falling just before dark this evening and we have about a half an inch. I hope they are all huddled down someplace warm.

When we made a walk in the woods early Sunday morning we met a lady who had seen deer, but we weren't so lucky. I know they're there, but it's very hard to capture a glimpse of them, and if you do, they're too far away to make a good picture. That's why I'm always impressed by your deer photos. To have them in your own garden, that is quite something!
ReplyDeleteHI Carletta, Bet those deer are COLD this morning. It's only 9 a.m. and our temperature is 19 degrees and going DOWN DOWN DOWN all day long. The wind is howling and it's still snowing some. We only have about an inch on the ground --so I don't know how the new spring growth will do through this horribly cold spell. Only time will tell.
ReplyDeleteLove seeing your deer... My birds are eating-eating-eating this morning... Bless their hearts..
Hugs,
Betsy
oh, these are beauties! so glad they feel comfortable enough to come to your place!
ReplyDeleteThese photos are adorable!
ReplyDeleteshe is smallish! such cute ears.. it's evident you have a "safe zone", so trusting.
ReplyDeleteMama has taught them it's safe here and I bet they will return when they are grown.
If I remember correctly, no dogs, but a cat?
Oh, and a Jeep. (:
So sweet and I love that close up of the mama!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful captures of the deer, Carletta. The last shot is just adorable but I loved all your photos.
ReplyDeleteA lovely family.
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful pictures of the deer family. I'm glad Mama is comfortable enough in your yard to bring the little ones around. I remember the babies when they were much smaller, and I look forward to seeing more in the future. I sure hope they've found a warm place for today and tonight.
ReplyDeleteFantastic photos of the wild life in your yard, Carletta.
ReplyDeleteI am sure that the young deer will survive the cold weather. Deers like cattle, goats and sheep just will go into a huddle for warmth from big freezes. The young are very well protected, it is the herd instinct. It is the predators that do the carnage, not the weather so much.
Cheers from a presently cloudless and sunny, Brisbane!!!!
Poured here again last night - what's new in that department? - ha ha!!!!

These are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of the deer. I just learned yesterday that does generally give birth to a singleton their first pregnancy and thereafter they usually have twins. Don't know whether it's true or not but found that an interesting observation which was attributed to a game warden in our area.
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful you can see these beautiful animals in your yard. That little one in the last photo is absolutely adorable. I hope the cold temperatures don't bother them too much. I would imagine mama keeps them close and warm.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful and expressive captures of mood and nature.
ReplyDeleteAwwww they are cuties.
ReplyDeleteWe had some snow yesterday and a little bit this morning, good enough to cover the ground hehehe..
absolutely wonderful captures -- excellent work!
ReplyDeleteGlad to see the update on the twins. And always love your backyard sanctuary.
ReplyDeleteThey all look on alert in that first photo- so cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun I would have at your house! Mama is so beautiful...I guess I would be tempted to put out stuff for them, but know that would get expensive!
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly why this Southern Boy quit hunting 10 years ago!!!
