This is the scene Hubby and I came upon as we left the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park last month. We rounded a curve and I saw the barns and asked him to find a place to pull off of the two lane road. He really only could pull over on the berm so I took these rather quickly. It was early morning and the sky was white and overcast with a little fog.
You're probably wondering what that big dish is in the center of the photos. The dish is at the center of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank West Virginia. This radio telescope is the largest fully steerable dish in the world. I zoomed in as much as I could to capture the barn above. I love the cupolas. My camera couldn't bring in the back barn quite as well but it was enough to bring out the green and white silo and all the rolls of hay.The barns on the opposite side of the field were harder to get close shots of. It's hard to say whether they were all part of one farm or two. I zoomed in one the dish for a better view. We had passed the observatory on our way to Cass but didn't stop to visit. If you look closely you'll see a smaller dish to the left of the larger one.I little farther down the road I happened to look out the back window on the drivers side of the Jeep and saw another view. We stopped to get this view as well. One day we plan to visit and take the tour.Blogger's new interface lets you click on the pictures for a much bigger view. Go ahead, make em' bigger!
Posted for this week's Barn Charm with Tricia.
great barn shots under difficult conditions. You must go back and do the telescope tour and show us more.Big pics are great.
ReplyDeleteliving near that huge dish might be a bit disconcerting, but those barns sure are nice! :)
ReplyDeleteCarletta...Your Cass trip ended up giving you a wealth of wonderful photos to share. Each post is so interesting. Am always begging Buddy to pull off so I can shoot barns. Lately I have been taking a different back road home each day from school and in turn am finding a wealth of cool barns in the area I knew nothing about. These shots are really awesome. It is a pretty large farm. The shot of the radio telescope in mind boggling. Great post this week. genie
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful barn photos and I am intrigued with the huge dishes as well. Great post!

ReplyDeletereally pretty barns, with nice charming shapes. the silo is a nice bonus!!
ReplyDeleteA white barn and a silo. The perfect combination!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like science fiction next to that dish!
ReplyDeleteLovely well kept barn and silo... I agree with Mary, that dish looks a bit ET-ish!
ReplyDeleteGreat scenic farm shots....that huge dish is very interesting!!!

Hi, Carletta,
ReplyDeleteHow amazing that we posted the same barn!! Too funny!
We did the trip to the Cass railroad last year too. Isn't that a beautiful area? I've only read this one post of yours, but I like your blog! I'm going to check out previous posts!
Thanks for visiting and leaving your comment!
I love the barns! Great shots!
ReplyDeleteReally!
Very nice. I would like to explore those barns.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots! I love that green and white silo top. :) I’m so glad you told us what the dish is all about. I’d have grumbled wondering. LOL An observatory visit sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteThat dish is HUGE! But better that than a windfarm I think. I like that these buildings are all white (to co-ordinate with the dish?)
ReplyDeleteCarletta, I just realized that the barn you shared today is the one I shared on my blog last week! That is really strange...!
ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful barn shots. A barn that would be fun to explore i'll bet. Also, pretty amazing size on that dish! Looks huge. Lovely photos!
ReplyDeleteFine looking barns. You got some very shots of them. The big dish was interesting too. Good job of shooting.
ReplyDeleteLovely barn -- great cupolos make it even more charming. Bill would want to visit the dish thing -- we went to something like that once in New mexico -- the place where the movie "contact" was filmed.
ReplyDeleteThat dish is HUGE! I can't imagine who has to climb in it to maintain it.
ReplyDeleteFabulous barn shots! And that is one BIG dish. lol
ReplyDeleteInteresting contrast in the first picture, barn with giant dish just a few yards over. Interesting info. about it too. I'll have to show the pic to hubby.
