If you've been visiting here the past few weeks you know Hubs and I spent a weekend in and around Cass, West Virginia. I was lucky enough to spot quite a few barns that hubby had to keep stopping for so I could take photos of all I saw. This first one was just off the highway on a side road. I love the washed out red paint. If you enlarge these you will see an advertisement on the end of the barn. The one word I could make out is Hermitage. There is an inn and restaurant named that nearby but I can't be for certain if there is a connection. Did you notice all the pigeons on top of the silo? The lightning rods atop the cupolas have little stars on them.
We decided to follow the little road in front of the barn for a short distance so I could get a photo of another barn below the road. The fields around the barn circled back quite a distance. I liked how the fall foliage on the trees and the green grasses on the bank of the roadway framed this empty hay wagon.
The fields had recently been mowed and I couldn't resist a shot of the rolls of hay. The sky was completely washed out on this particular morning so I've added a texture to this image. I like the painted effect it gives the photo.

How gorgeous the foliage makes your fine farm photos! The bottom one looks like a Monet: reminds me of haystacks with colors.

ReplyDeleteI had an American Missionary teach who came to Borneo. after 28 years we had a reunion, and a boy sang this song.
What do you know, it brought tears to this 70n something woman. She grew up in West Virginia.
What a cool barn! You must have had quite a trip over the WV hills from the Ohio to this hamlet in the Blue Ridge. The barn is lovely, the faded red pain full of character. It seems with stars on those rods, they are taunting the lightning, daring the electrical charge to follow the shortest path, Neat!

I will indeed learn to take time to make stops, and catch a few, due to your inspiration.

ReplyDeleteI like the barn -- and the scenes you captured along that country road. I'm sorry I can't help you with the message on the barn, but I'm confident it didn't say Visit Rock City, which is fairly common on older barns around here.

I saw that the paint was washed out on the barn, but I didn't see the words until I read what you wrote, then I enlarged the pic & WoW! there's lots of words on there. Could it maybe say The Hermitage Motel & Restaurant? There's more under that, but I just can't make it out... that's so neat!!!
