I never get tired of this view. This is Hawk's Nest State Park in West Virginia. There isn't much of a fence across the top of that stone wall but I guess it does serve its purpose, I assume, which is to deter folks from wanting to sit on the wall. It is a very steep and a long way down to the bottom.
I'm too short to stand and be able to look over the wall and fence so unless I'm above the view this is what I see looking down.
A close up of the little iron fence.
I have made visits to this state park all of my life. This past May was my most recent trip when I took my nephew who is from California to visit the park. Above is a photo of my Dad holding my younger brother as they peered down from the overlook. This was taken in 1956. My brother was two years old at the time.
Dad had taken us up for the day and we had a picnic. This is my brother, me (age three), my Mom and my Grandmother Bessie, my Dad's Mom. The photo was printed in June so I'm guessing this could have been to celebrate my Mom's Memorial Day birthday. I love that she's wearing pearls, my Grandma is in a hat, my brother has a white dress shirt on as did Dad and I'm in a dress with a collar. Things were definitely much more fashionable back in the day.

HI Carletta Love the stone wall adn the little iron fence and the different views you photographed it from. Gorgeous photos of your fmaily all those years ago. Yes wedressed well togoout in those days even for a picnic.
The view is gorgeous! I would never sit on the stone wall. I don't like high places. :-)
Interesting look back to past times visiting this pretty place. The fence is a good idea to stop people/children falling over.
Such a long way down! incredible view. No wonder you enjoy coming back.
Oh, what a great post! I've got to visit that park!!
Hello Carletta, what a beautiful view of the park! I like the name too. The old family photos are awesome! Great fence scenes, have a happy day!
I really like the first photo of the park, Carletta! Beautiful composition. And the family photos are precious. Yep, I cannot imagine wearing pearls to a picnic. The last photos n=made me smile. :)
Wonderful family photos! And such a spectacular view! I'd love to visit that place.
Beautiful view of lake and bridge. The close up view of the iron fence looks like pencils.
What a well-crafted post! Love the breathtaking view and your family photos.
Grand view indeed...and I enjoyed going back in time with the 'older' photo shares.
adorable old photos and sweet memories! a view worth remembering and revisiting. :)
Oh, Carletta...love this stepping back in time! I so love that view, too. It reminds me of looking off the Pinnacle at home.
Even for a picnic folks put on good clothes. they probably had dress shoes on as well. Nice memories.
Great post full of memories.
What a fun post. That is a great view. I'm not sure I'd want to get any closer though as I have a fear of heights. - So loved the old family photos too. Those were simplier times.
Oh that is an incredible view and your old photo memories are so very special. Thanks for sharing. B

I've been to Hawk's Nest a couple of times. Wonderful place! West Virginia is not far from us but that's the Wardensville area and the New River is about 3 hours from here.
Congratulations on being recommended by Mersad Donko.
Nice family memories - and good to see how people used to dress up for a picnic!

I remember dressing up more while growing up. My mom was always dressed up when we went anywhere. Those days are long gone I guess, most women don't even wear dresses to church anymore.
This is a pretty place- I love old railroad bridges.
It is fun to visit childhood haunts and lovely to have the pictures! But aren't you glad you can go there in blue jeans now!
what fun pictures Carletta.
I love traditions and you have so many memories associated with this one...I love that you have pictures from your family's past visits....and yes, pearls and hats....so different today.....
Nice one !
