Rural Thursday: Wildlife In The Country

Around our five acres the wildlife at times seems overabundant. The deer which have been content to stay in the woods and forage on the mast of a good winter have begun showing up for greener pastures - mainly mine and my neighbors lawns. Yes, she's looking at me but rarely pays me any mind.
This young button buck takes great pleasure in nibbling on the young sprouts of my Rose of Sharon bushes.
I have about eight bushes in a line and the first five or so are about six feet tall. Closer to the woods at the end of the line this is what they look like and this photo shows why!
The deer feel safe in my surroundings and the above photo makes it all worth it to me. Sorry this is somewhat out of focus but last week a mama doe decided to bring her fawn out of the woods. It was nearing dark and when she saw me she headed back into the woods. This was the best photo I could get but I feel sure she'll be back.
The baby goslings born near a neighbor's pond are looking more and more like teenagers now. They grow up so fast.
Every summer I try my best to get 'THE' butterfly shot and maybe someday it will happen. :)  As I came home one day last week this guy was fluttering around the garage door. Even after landing on the side of the house he didn't want to keep those wings very still but he posed just long enough for a quick shot.
Stopping at the mailbox to get the mail my husband noticed something in the grass. Since I always have my camera I got out and walked toward the ball of feathers. I believe this is a baby mockingbird. He couldn't yet fly but boy could he run. I took a couple of quick shots in the noonday sun and left him alone so as not to stress him. Mama and Dad were in the tree above me giving orders. I'm sure I heard them mockingly squawking, 'Fly Forest, fly!'
Hope you've enjoyed the wildlife found on my five acres of bliss this week!

Holy catfish! I won't use the usual vernacular of Aussies, probably the same as in the USA? However this is a family orientated blog!
Your 5 acres sure has some interesting wildlife. Maybe the deers do "over nibble" what they shouldn't but they are so beautiful to look at. The young buck deer looks like he needs a good feed. So I'd forgive this bloke/buck. A nibble here and there is really not a crime, is it?
The goose family! Well those gooslings sure are plump! Enough said on that subject. The mouth just waters with strange epicurean tastes! ha ha! Watch out geese, the French might arrive and boy oh boy can they cook you!
The mockingbird "kiddo" - having already said that I had no idea of what they looked like, many thanks for a look at this little bloke. I am sure if you did get too close, he would have taken off. Yep "Fly Forest, fly" would have happened.
Great informative blog on your visitors, many thanks.
Cheers

Weather report: Now 5.30pm Thursday 21st.
Pitch dark! But big fog this morning, then sunny but no real warmth in it. Still better than drizzle and winds.

What a wonderful journey around your 5 acres today! (Did I say I was totally jealous of your country place and the acreage?) When you enjoy wildlife, it is hard to be too upset when they visit, but I am sure you would rather they eat something besides your Rose of Sharon! Like the weeds, or something! I laughed at your "Fly, Forest, Fly" words... it reminded me of the movie which I really enjoyed!

Great post, Carletta. Love seeing your wildlife --especially the deer (and fawn) --and the little baby mockingbird... Reminded me of the baby Bluebird here that I showed pictures of yesterday.

Thanks for posting.
Hugs,
Betsy

We used to have lots of wildlife visitors when we lived in the country, too, & I miss it! I don't like living in the city, even tho this is a relatively small town. We had lots & lots of rabbits, but also saw deer, coyote, even saw a wolf one time... Great captures, love the shot of mama & baby deer & also the teens, they're too darn cute w/ their waddling!!! =)

You got some wonderful pictures of your woodland visitors. The picture of the fawn and its mother is special. I'm not really comforted knowing that deer like to nibble on Rose of Sharon bushes as well as they like nibbling on rose bushes!

I certainly enjoyed seeing all your wildlife around your place! (but I'm sure there's a lot more!!!)

The deer on our property stay mostly down by the creek and pond, so I haven't had a good look at this year's babies.

Great shots Carletta. :)

I loved seeing your wildlife pictures, especially the baby bird! The red admiral looks a bit tattered, doesn't it? Great shot, though. Butterflies are so busy, hard to get them to hold still.
