Many readers will remember this Watery Wednesday shot from last November. I was in the same area last week after days of rain.What was once an idyllic setting was turned into a swifly moving current of muddy water. Standing on the bridge crossing the swollen creek below I was astounded at the swiftness of the water below me. This was an old bridge and the only 'side' was a metal guardrail which meant there wasn't any barrier higher than the calf of my leg. Looking through the viewfinder at the swiftly moving water made me just a bit uneasy.
This is looking upstream. It is the same view from a different angle than the small image above. The building in the right hand side of the picture is an old Grange building that has been renovated. It was established in 1873. The Grange is a fraternal organization for American farmers that encourages farm families to band together for their common economic and political good. The organization was founded in 1867 after the Civil War.

Isn't this unusual for this time of year. I might expect something like this in early spring but not in winter. Hmmmm. The weather sure has been peculiar lately!

ReplyDeleteFlowing water, a force of nature not to be reckoned with. I always remember news footage of swollen rivers eating away at the banks and taking houses with them. I could understand why you felt uneasy standing there.

ReplyDeleteMy, oh my, that water looks a bit testy to me. I'd have been nervous on an old bridge too. Hope it doesn't flood on you. Some of those buildings look pretty close to it's banks. Dramatic photos.
ReplyDeleteSo we weren't the only ones that got way too much rain. Saw areas flooded that had not before. We actually had schools closed all over East Tennessee, not snow days but rain days. Go figure!

I used to have a house with a similar creek running along the back edge of the lot. Normally the banks were just about the level of my head (6') and the water only a few inches to a foot or so deep. But let us get a steady rain for a couple of days and it would fill those 6-foot banks in a hurry. And more than once I saw it flood. It was a good 50 yards from my back door to the edge, but a couple of times I sandbagged the basement ... just to be safe.

You were probably safer on that old bridge than you would have been along the water soaked river banks. I am glad you stayed high and dry. That water doesn't look very friendly.

Brings back memories - we moved from a flood zone almost nine years ago. Every time we got any amount of rain, our Lost River would think about coming out of its banks. Saw plenty of rushing water.

ReplyDeleteWe have snow! Probably 2-3 inches...the kind that blows around. As I sit here and type I am watching it be blown from roofs in the neighborhood. The wind is definitely picking up...even colder weather is headed out way.

ReplyDeleteCarletta: The weather is so topsy-turvey that this flow doesn't surprise me. When you get snow then 60F weather you will get big run-offs. Very neat captures of the creek.
